Well, there is a mitzva to live in Eretz Yisroel.

So I guess the answer to the first two question is “zero”.

    How do you define “frum?”

    shomer shabbos.

And how do you define that? If someone uses a controversial eruv, are they still Shomer Shabbos?

    wolf:

there is a lot of controversy in the definition of “frum”, and I am not at all prepared to discuss the nuances of such a broad word, especially with someone as well learned and knowledgeable as yourself.

define shomer shabbos for yourself, and use that as your own definition of frum.

theres got to be some ground that we can all safely call frum/shomer shabbos.

Wolf may or may not be well learned…asking ridiculous and irrelevant questions is no indication of erudition.

    BS”D

Take 20% of the Israeli Jewish population

Add to that 10% of the world Jewish population

As for NY I think the answer is 300,000 but I am not sure

    NJ – no idea

Why is it ridiculous? How many shomrei shabbos are there in the world who would be surprised that you don’t consider them shomrei shabbos?

    #886124

I’m surprised no one mentioned the fact that we are not allowed to count people…Isn’t it in this weeks parsha?

As for wolf’s comment he is spot on…I’m sure there are people here that would not consider some MO people frum cause they may have a TV or go to a mixed school, but These people would define themselves as such….

observanteen, you should be a little more respectful….

    doncha think?

Even using the most liberal criteria, there are a lot less Orthodox than is claimed. For that matter, there are a lot less Jews overall than claimed.

I read a number of years back that it is estimated that there are about 250,000 chareidim in the entire world.

How does one define chareidim, I don’t know?

How does one define frum, I don’t know?

If the criteria is shmiras shabbos, must be much higher, if the criteria is black hat and to the right of that it is probobly much lower.

What if they speak Lashon Hora? What if they discuss business on Shabbos? What about people who don’t spend all day doing Torah and Mitsvos.

How about a definition the covers anyone who always refuses a job on Shabbos, and keeps some standard of kashrus (at least on a level that they can’t go out to work with goysha coworkers). Being mesiras nefesh to be Jewish seems a good factor in being “frum”, and it leaves out virtually all non-orthodox Jews.

Probably well under 20% of Jewish adults (under a million), but perhaps almost half of children (suggeting big changes are coming).

The politicians probably have a pretty fare idea of borough demography, but you’re not going to get anywhere near 100,000. I bet Marvin Schick could make a good estimate. How many Lubavichers do you think are in Crown Heights?

According to various reports quoted in the (secular) media Satmar alone has 150,000 Chasidim (worldwide.)

This is a very non-trivial project you have taken on!

The 2001 National Jewish Population Survey estimated that there were about 529,000 Orthodox Jews in America: 324,000 adults and 205,000 children. The latter number matches almost exactly the count of children in day schools done by Dr. Marvin Schick a few years later for the Avi Chai foundation. A more recent survey shows some growth in day school enrollment.

    http://www.jewishfederations.org/page.aspx?id=108513

    http://www.avi-chai.org/knowledge-center/

There have been a lot of studies of local Jewish populations, most recently in New Haven CT. Here is a site with links:

    http://www.jewishdatabank.org/community.asp

The Israel Central Bureau of Statistics publishes estimates of that country’s Jewish population:

    http://www1.cbs.gov.il/reader/?MIval=cw_usr_view_Folder&ID=141

Their attitude is “a Jew is a Jew is a Jew” so they don’t break down the population by observance levels. A good estimate of the adult Charedi population might be obtained from the fraction of votes obtained by the Charedi political parties in elections; a good estimate of the population of frum kids might be found from school enrollments. Adult Religions Zionists are more difficult, though, as they vote for many different political parties.

    Good luck!

From the 2003 Jewish Federation Survey:

    Neighborhood # Jews % O # O

    Williamsburg 52,700 94% 49,538

    Flatbush/Midwood/Kensington 101,100 54% 54,594

    Borough Park 76,600 74% 56,684

    Fresh Meadows/KewGardens Hills/Hillside 28,200 51% 14,382

“How about a definition the covers anyone who always refuses a job on Shabbos, and keeps some standard of kashrus “

If you are shomer Shabat and you have a kosher home, you are part of the Orthodox community even if you don’t observe any other mitzvot: Guests can eat in your home.

“If you are shomer Shabat and you have a kosher home, you are part of the Orthodox community”

The requirement to be a practicing Shomer Shabat is not the Federation criteria of the Orthodox label let alone Chareidi. Accordingly, the numbers are much lower, especially out of New York City when using standard daati definitions.

The present estimate for Orthodox Jews in Eretz Yisrael is between 900 thousand and one million; in North America, between 550-650 thousand; and in the rest of the world between 120-150 thousand, making for a total of between 1.67-1.8 million[4].
