I’m nearly turning 18, and I’m a bit nervous. Y’know, we’ll be leaving HS soon and then life’ll be soooo different!!! I’m terrified of the big wide world out there! Is there reason for my being so edgy, or is it an exciting leap?

Any major change in life results in some apprehension. It’s perfectly normal.

No it is an exciting leap. Though after a while the newness wears off and you settle into it. I do opine that the leap/excitedness has to do more with switching out of high school rather than turning 18, but yes, turning 18 is an exciting period in and of itself also (I am 19 and graduated high school at 16 turning 17 hence my opinion).

Congratulations (yeah I know a bit early) and I am sure you will do great!

I really know how you are feeling! I’m turning 18 in less then 2 months! That same question has been playing in my head as well. It is also different for a girl then a boy. A boy is in yeshiva and when he graduates just moves on to beis medrash, which doesn’t seem as big of a jump. For a girl on the other hand, Senior year is scary! It’s all about which sem you’re applying to, where you are gonna get in, and then leaving everything you are used to, to go to Israel. (or sems other places) But there is a major fear of the unknown! I know the feeling and am a bit scared myself! I feel like this just happened so fast!

    “those are really terrific years!”

Oh, my. If THESE are terrific, I’m absolutely terrified of the future!! Just kidding. It’s just that it irkes me a bit when people say that the teenage yrs are so rosy. They’re really challenging and sometimes can get real rough.

Candy: thanks 4 understanding! Turning 18 NEXT WEEK. WHEW!!!

enjoy it….you’ll look back fondly on those years

i felt the same way at 18 as you are feeling! but then when i reached 20 i felt like i was really leaving my teenage years behind and it’s weird to be a “real adult” now lol! (oh my i sound like i am sooooo old! 18, 20 even 21, 22 is still young!!)

enjoy every moment of every age! and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

MAZAL TOV! 18 is very exciting for many reasons but first understand that 18 is a very mazeldik number. It stands for “chai” so it will breathe new “life” into you.

The anxiety might come from “18 l’chupah” which is a challenging concept. Most 18 year olds are far from ready for a walk to the chupah, so maybe that’s where some of the anxiety comes from. It also represents a separation from childhood into a adulthood. A time when you are expected to be more responsible and accountable.

But it is also liberating, it is a time when you realize “hey, I’m an adult now! I made it! i am done with most of school. I am either heading to sem or coming home from sem, either way a huge accomplishment and now I have to really concentrate on MY future. I am really in charge of MY choices and need to make educated and smart ones. I now get to put into practice the things I was taught. I am now a role model for others to follow. The friends I choose will have a huge impact on who I will become. Each path I take will determine whether I succeed or not. So where do I go from here, who will I choose as MY role models? Up till this point you were spoon fed all the answers and now…..

Don’t be terrified because you are not being thrown into an abyss. Your parents, grandparents b”h if you are lucky to have them, are still there for you to answer your questions and guide you. But most likely they will take a step back and wait for your to ask for advice and not necessarily TELL you what to do every minute of the day. So enjoy your birthday and the new “challenges” that come along with it.

it can be tough when coming out of high school and turning 18. life seems to come and stare you in the face at times when your out of school, it all works out. Its normal to be nervous no one knows whats there for them. njoy it especially in seminary. your still carefree. njoy and happy birthday to those who r turning 18. and to those who r having or had a birthday this year.

Aries: how should I know whom to choose as my role model? I’ve learnt this year that ppl are’nt necessarily what they seem to be.

eclipse, can I take part in that bracha? I’ve got a little way till the social security checks start coming…

To everyone here turning 18 (or whatever age you might be turning), realize Hashem brought you to this point in your life and He will continue to help you with everything. Its only hard if you make it hard. I also went through the same thought process, but while its normal to be nervous, there is no need for it.

    Hatzlacha!

it may seem hard now but at every point in life we ask ourselves how we thought the teens, 20s, 30s, etc was hard or busy… every point in life has its own good points, as well as some tough parts… hatzlocha with everything
