Do you think that A) science contradicts torah, B) science does not contradict torah, or C) science “supports” torah (so to speak, torah doesn’t need science’s support). And please try to bring examples to support your opinion
February 6, 2011 2:32 am at 2:32 am #736784☕️coffee addictParticipantwell for instance scientist say the world is so many billions of years old, the Torah doesn’t say how old the world is
February 6, 2011 2:33 am at 2:33 am #736785charliehallParticipantB.
There are resolutions for every apparent conflict between science and torah, we just may not know them right now.
And it is VERY dangerous to say that science “supports” torah because you are then implying that it is possible for science to oppose torah, chas v’shalom.
February 6, 2011 2:36 am at 2:36 am #736786Josh31ParticipantThey are two separate windows to knowledge.
Torah is a shared national experience (Exodus and Har Sinai) and can not be reproduced in the lab.
Science is what can be observed and / or reproduced in the lab.
February 6, 2011 2:44 am at 2:44 am #736787observanteenMemberScience does contradict the Torah although not all the time(Evolution). In any case, we find all the chachma of science in the Torah.
February 6, 2011 2:52 am at 2:52 am #736788metrodriverMemberThe Torah does not need the support and corroboration of Science. But sometimes, Science seems to confirm what the Torah has said already. Like when the archaeologists find a location that is mentioned in the Torah and the events described are confirmed by the evidence. But confirmed atheists (apikorsim) will find excuses for everything and will not become believers. Some years ago, Science and Torah were mutually exclusive. The scientists mocked the Torah, claiming it to be old fashioned and not sophisticated as they were.

February 6, 2011 3:15 am at 3:15 am #736791Ctrl Alt DelParticipantThe Rambam had a very interesting take on this as he was a physcian/scientist, and a tremendous gaon. I will paraphrase. “If we see a contradiction in science and torah, it must mean that we don’t fully understand what the torah was saying” He seems to be saying that whats known in science is absolutely true, and whats in the torah is absolutely true. WE just didnt understand the torah, so to us it seems like a contradiction.
February 6, 2011 3:18 am at 3:18 am #736792ItcheSrulikMemberHe also considers proven mathematical theorems (theora? theorae?) to have the status of divrei neviim.
February 6, 2011 3:36 am at 3:36 am #736793mw13ParticipantThe Torah is a description of the world by its ineffable, infallible Creator. He knows how the world works because He made it. He is never wrong.
Science is a description of the world by limited, mortal men. It is a series of guesses (albeit educated guesses) based solely upon observation. It has been wrong many, many times. (Remember when the world was flat? Or when the earth was the center of the universe? How about when all cognitive activity took place in the heart?)
Take your pick.
Josh31:
“Torah is a shared national experience (Exodus and Har Sinai) and can not be reproduced in the lab.”
An “experience”? The Torah is the knowledge that Hashem gave us at Har Sinai.

And your point is?
February 6, 2011 4:41 am at 4:41 am #736795Josh31ParticipantEvery religion has its “Torah”, we had first the Exodus and Har Sinai experiences and then the Torah that Moshe brought down to us.
Tefilin have to written in order. First the Exodus and then acceptance of G-d’s sovereignty.

OK… But the Torah is still what we received at Har Sinai, not an “experience”.
“Tefilin have to written in order. First the Exodus and then acceptance of G-d’s sovereignty.”
True, but what exactly does that have to do with anything?
