I never had Applesauce Cake, but I found this recipe online. Personally, I would leave out the cloves and allspice (not a fan) but the picture looked like what you described. Enjoy!

    2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

    2 cups sugar

    1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

    1/4 teaspoon baking powder

    1 1/2 teaspoons salt

    3/4 teaspoon cinnamon

    1/2 teaspoon clove

    1/2 teaspoon allspice

    1/2 cup vegetable oil

    1/2 cup water

    1 1/2 cups unsweetened applesauce

    2 eggs

1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

    2 Grease a 9×13 baking dish.

3 Combine all ingredients; pour in prepared pan.

4 Bake 60-65 minutes or until done.

Heres a highly rated recipe from allrecipes.com, but truthfully I like sac’s better cuz its less oil than this one.

    Applesauce Cake VI

Original Recipe Yield 1 – 10 inch tube pan

    Ingredients

    3 cups all-purpose flour

    3 teaspoons baking powder

    2 teaspoons baking soda

    1/2 teaspoon salt

    2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

    4 eggs

    2 cups white sugar

    1 1/2 cups vegetable oil

    2 cups applesauce

    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    Directions

1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10 inch tube pan. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Set aside.

2.In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Make a well in the center and pour in the eggs, sugar, oil, applesauce and vanilla. Mix well and pour into prepared pan.

3.Bake in the preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.

I wonder if this cake could successfully be baked in a bundt pan? I would NEVER leave out cloves or allspice. They add so much flavor to my apple kugels, cranberry relish, and most especially they are the secret ingredient in my prune filling for the hamantashen. A little goes a long way, though.

Here is a tried and true recipe that looks very plain, but tastes delicious. Preheat over to 350.Oil a 9″x 13″ pan. Mix together: 3 eggs,1 cup oil,2 cups applesauce,2 tsp. vanilla,2 cups sugar. Then add in 3 cups flour,2 tsp. baking soda, and 2 tsp. cinnamon. If you like raisins, you can mix in 1 cup.Bake 45 minutes to an hour(until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean.) Enjoy!
