Hi, I am a mother of children who have baruch hashem grown up and I I am looking to go back to school for occupational therapy. I started off for nursing but physically and financially it did not work out. I would love to attend TTI however they are not accepting new students. I have also went to the new seminary for a bit right when it started , It was extremely expensive and did not have a few woman in my age group as promised by the Rebitzen. If you know of any other program, either on line or in class please let me know. Touro is not a option. also please post around what price range is the tuition and how were your experiences. Tizku lemitsvot for helping me out.

April 15, 2011 12:38 am at 12:38 am #759780yolkMembercan someone please explain whats the difference between occupational and physical therapy/
and does touro offer any of those fields?
thank you
April 15, 2011 4:33 am at 4:33 am #759781grw613Memberthats a good question OT is basically helping people with activities of daily living/functional/meaningful activities. Its a very interesting and very broad field. You can work on visual perceptial skills, sensory deficits, can work as a hand therapist, school based therapist and work on fine motor skills..classroom performance.. mental health…physical disabilities..as far as PT is concerned I am not so familiar with PT but i know they focus more on physical mobility/walking but not limited to this. yes Touro offers both OT and PT degrees.
April 15, 2011 10:35 am at 10:35 am #759782chayaleahMemberI am an occupational therapist. Unfortunately I do not enjoy the work. It consists of taking people to the bathroom, dressing, bathing and feeding them. Maybe for another person it is ok, but to me it is quite depressing. The work is usually in a nursing home and you work with extremely sick people and are required to see them for as many minutes as their insurance or medicare will allow. I wish I had chosen a different field.
April 15, 2011 10:02 pm at 10:02 pm #759783yolkMemberchayaleah- why don’t you try getting a job in a different area such as school or for young children?
grw613- thanks for clarifying the matter!! really helps!!
April 17, 2011 1:54 am at 1:54 am #759784grw613MemberChayaleah- thats tough that you are not enjoying what you do.I am not yet an OT so I cant exactly relate but As yolk mentioned, why dont you look into other areas and see what you enjoy doing. I like the field of OT (not the schooling!) cause there are so many areas in which you can work in. If You don’t like working in one specialty area you can switch to another. what origianlly made you interested in OT? did u specifically enjoy any of ur experiences of observing OTs before u started OT or during fieldwork. perhaps look into the fields that you enjoyed observing.Speak to other OTs in the field that you may be interested in and ask questions! hope this helps! Hatzlacha with everything! Remember “meshane makom meshane mazal”
April 17, 2011 3:30 am at 3:30 am #759785oomisParticipantYolk, my daughrter is getting her OT degree from Touro (in Bayshore), and it is an excellent program. She LOVES it, and about Chayaleah, but my daughter has never described her work, even her field work in that way. Chayleah shopuld perhaps choose a different area in which to do her OT, as she is clearly unhappy in the nursing homes.
April 17, 2011 12:07 pm at 12:07 pm #759786chayaleahMemberI don’t mean to discourage people, I was just writing about my feelings. Yes working in the nursing homes is the worst setting but it seems now that the majority of the jobs are there. I have extreme burnout because everyone around is dieing and in pain and there is not anything I can do to help. I feel like I am bothering them to get them out of bed when they would rather just rest but am forced to do therapy with them as you have to bill for a certain amount of minutes. It goes against my conscious really but what can you do. I know I am in the wrong job and as I say it makes me so depressed everyday. Sorry to write this and don’t want to be a downer but that is how I feel at the moment.
April 17, 2011 5:31 pm at 5:31 pm #759787grw613MemberChayaleah-sounds like a tough job. I had a similar experience during my fieldwork where i had to beg patients in the hospital to partcipate and it was not fun! The patient i was required to see was really really sick and did not want to participate but the facility required a certain amount of hours! Perhaps you should ask a shailah. About jobs- there are many jobs out there I really don’t think youll have a problem-esp in pediatrics. If you are interested in working with children perhaps this is a field for you. Really look into other fields-esp if you feel burnt out Hatzlacha!

thanks for identifying your feelings in the nursing home field- now i know what to look out for if becoming an ot!!
April 17, 2011 6:00 pm at 6:00 pm #759789yolkMemberbut does anyone know which field is either and worthwhile to find a job??? and which has decent pay?
