hi, im practicing safrus. i reccomend what i did/am doing: learn “mishnas hasofer”, “mishnas sofrim”, “mishna berurah hilchos tefillin”,”likut sifray stam”, and, most important, find some local sofrim to demonstrate some things and answer any questions you have. last, a helpful site is “ctc torah.org”.

if you ever want to be certified, the best place in USA or israel is the “vaad mishmeres stam”- 718 438 4980. before going to them, check with a sofer to make sure you’re ready.

torahbob: I am a sofer (not certified – I mostly write and illustrate non-STaM stuff like kesubbos, smichah certificates, parshas haketores, and other artistic work). It is of course important to learn the basic seforim, but it is equally important to find a good experienced sofer that is willing to teach you the technical points. In many ways, safrus is much like the skilled artisan trades of yesteryear – to become really proficient, you need to apprentice. Good techniques and the basic mechanics of how to do this kind of work well is passed from mouth to mouth, form teacher to student.

I learned recently and I am about to finish a megillah on time or purim i’yh. The halachos I used Mishnas Hasofer and Otzar Sta”m [3 vol.]. I think that Otzar Stam is much more clear, while Mishnas Hasofer discusses everything.

To learn the umnos I learned from a sofer in lakewood who writes and taught me one and one. It is best to learn one and one then with a group especially for shapiras ha’osios. If youb are willing to come into lakewood I am sure my melamed will be happy to teach you.

you cannot learn by yourself you need a teacher and not everyone can teach

To get a ksav kabala you have to learn 1)Mishnas Sofrim (found in Mishna Berura Chelek Alef) 2) shulchan Aruch siman lamed bais and lamed vav w/ Biur Halacha 3)keses Hasofer- Found either in a sefer called Likut sifrei stam (aprox. $24 in ny) or with a perush Called Mishnas Hasofer Aprox $36 in ny

I’m currently learning safrus. Where can I buy supplies in Brooklyn? I especially want to buy those precut plastic tips for practicing.

I dont think a lefty can write safrus.

The issue is with someone who is not a pure lefty. The kesiva of an ambidextrous sofer should be done with the right hand l’chatchilah.

Personally, I would not purchase stam written by someone who learned from YouTube.

Good, now I’m not worried, because b’nei Torah wouldn’t buy from you, so you won’t be machshil anyone.

Just letting you know first of all a softer told me to do so second your only learning how to write the letters after you master that you go learn the halachic parts with a softer. Wanna be more machmir than the softer who told me be my guest.
