Flatbush Shomrim busted a drug dealer in the Colonel David Marcus Memorial Playground on Avenue P between & East 5th street.
On May 23rd, 2010 the Flatbush Shomrim received a tip that drugs are being sold to minors on the playground. Members of Shomrim responded to investigate. After a three hour surveillance of the alleged perpetrators members of Shomrim observed drug dealing in the midst of the park with hundreds of children of all ages enjoying the outdoors with their families.
Members of Flatbush Shomrim called the local police giving the exact description and location of the perpetrators. Within a short time, members of the 66th precinct arrested the teenagers and confiscated the drugs.
Chaim Deutsch, founder of the Flatbush Shomrim stated “We will not tolerate drug dealing in our community especially in a park where our children are supposed to be safe. I encourage anyone with information to please come forward and let Shomrim do its work. I’m also sure Colonel David Marcus is proud of our accomplishment of keeping this park drug free.”
On January 19, 1934 Colonel David Marcus was named the first Deputy Commissioner of the NYPD’s Correction Department. He was also a Commissioner serving under Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia. In 1948, this playground was dedicated to the memory of colonel David Marcus, an outstanding Jewish-American patriot who sacrificed his life during the struggle for Israel’s Independence. On June 10th, 1948 he was killed while inspecting his troops.
