Is it a problem to try on a suit in a suitstore, which you know is for sure shatnez, and you’ll be wearing it for a good 15-20 minutes (alterations, etc)?

Interesting shaila. I never thought of this, but you have a very good point.

It is not a problem at all.

You are allowed to wear shaatnez to try it on.

Generally, you are allowed to wear shaatnez for any reason which is not that you want to benefit from wearing it.

So, for example the mishna says you can wear shaatnez if you are doing so while crossing a border and trying to avoid paying taxes on your merchandise by pretending it is your clothes.

    Consult your LOR.

It’s a complex scenario. Some instances are muter, some asur and some are a machlokes between the Bais Yosef and the Rema.

So the Mishna says you can avoid paying taxes by hiding what the government taxes?

Don’t you realize that cheating the government out of its tax revenue is a Mitzvas Asay so it is Docheh the Laav of Shatnez?

To be fair, it is talking about an anti-Semitic tax.

If there is too much shatnez to remove, and the suit can’t be worn in the end, alterations will be for nothing.

A tax the Gemara mentions is a tax solely to enrich the ruler and/or tax collectors. Taxes in places like America Bizman Hazeh are more like a Shutfus between all of the residents on a local, state, and national level because that tax money is used for what the government determines is best for its constituents. (And while that might not always be what is best for the Jews it still counts as a Shutfus because the government is intending to make the best possible choices from their point of view for the most people.)

    Itche:

You college guys are all the same. The comma goes after “lo”!

It seems you are correct; I forgot what the mishna said.

However, the halacha still is that you are allowed to wear shaatnez to try it on.

I’ll try to find a source to post.

    Popa:

    1) LOL

    2) Rashi ad loc quotes the diyuq in the gemara that excludes everything but derekh l’visha.
