What am I missing by not buying a $200 Hermes Neck tie, or a $300 Salvatore Ferragamo Belt, Or a $3000 Baroni Suit? What exactly is the mailoh of designer clothing? Isn’t it a TOTAL waste of momsey? Cant a calvin klien or nautica do the same justice?
January 7, 2011 2:52 pm at 2:52 pm #727021gavra_at_workParticipantRB:
How about a 20$ Hermes Neck tie, a 15$ Salvatore Ferragamo Belt, a 200$ Baroni Suit?
How do you know how much they paid?
You are on the tuition comittee & looked at their credit card bills?
January 7, 2011 3:08 pm at 3:08 pm #727022real-briskerMembergavra – Even so, what is the mailoh?
January 7, 2011 3:20 pm at 3:20 pm #727023pumperMemberDesigner clothing is obviously better quality and all, but I do not think that it is worth the price. If you get a $300 tie vs. a $30 tie, how much longer will you wear it for. Chances are you will retire it from your wardrobe long before it wears out. If you plan on wearing the same tie for the next 15 years straight, then yeah- maybe go for the more expensive one. But I have the feeling that most people are doing it for the label factor and not the quality factor.
Gavra-
“how do you know how much they paid”
it is common knowledge what certain designer items cost. These high end designers hardly go on sale, and if they do, they are still unaffordable for most. If people bought fakes for $15 (very common, btw) then they are obviously just doing it for the label factor and not the quality, because the quality of fakes are inferior to even non designer brands. So if you see a Ferragamo belt that is peeling, chances are it is not real.
January 7, 2011 3:31 pm at 3:31 pm #727024popa_bar_abbaParticipantHow much am I missing by not recognizing any of those names.
January 7, 2011 4:06 pm at 4:06 pm #727025pumperMemberPopa-
your not missing much. In fact, you probably have a lot more money in bank because of it!
January 7, 2011 4:27 pm at 4:27 pm #727026hudiParticipantdesigner clothing is better quality, but the price is majorly marked up, so the value goes down.
Lets say
A calvin klein suit that costs $400 has a quality of 6 out of 10. The value is $66 for every point (400/6)
But the Baroni suit for $3000 which a quality of 10 out of 10, really has a value of $300 per point (3000/10).
So although the Baroni is better quality, the Calvin Klein has a much better value. It’s not worth it to pay so much more for slightly better quality.
January 7, 2011 5:13 pm at 5:13 pm #727027real-briskerMemberhudi – What is better quality already between a calvin klien and baroni? I mean we are not compairing the baroni to a off brand, calvin klien is good quality, what is going to be better with the baroni?
January 7, 2011 6:43 pm at 6:43 pm #727028pumperMemberat some point you are no longer paying for quality, you are paying for the label and the status that you think comes along with it
January 7, 2011 6:47 pm at 6:47 pm #727029real-briskerMemberWhat about the label is worth $$?
January 7, 2011 6:50 pm at 6:50 pm #727030Sister BearMemberYou’re not missing anything except a name. You get a name when you wear designer clothes and it makes a statement.
Sure it might be better quality, but as pumper said you probably aren’t gonna wear it enough to figure it out.
And just think you can buy a ton more clothing for the same price as one designer clothing then since you have so much you wont wear those out either since you only wear them once in a while.
January 7, 2011 6:53 pm at 6:53 pm #727031mikehall12382Memberif you have the money, and pay all your bills and debts on time, then go for it…but, I would make sure you maximize your tzedakah beforehand 🙂 Besides, you cant wear a plain suite while diving a Ferrari
January 9, 2011 1:05 am at 1:05 am #727032aries2756ParticipantYou do realize that Calvin Klein is also a designer???
The point is when you buy a better product that is made with better fabric and better care you are buying something that you plan to wear for a long time. Many people buy staples for their wardrobe and they don’t mind paying the extra bucks for something that will last a long time. An Italian designer who makes his clothes in Italy makes a quality product that you won’t get from a designer that makes his clothes in China. There just is no comparison.
However, someone your age should not be concerned about it because you are not thinking of buy a classic suit that you will wear for the next 10 years. It is not your mindset and it is not in your budget. You are not in that madreigah neighter mentally or financially so it is not something that should worry you. As a matter of fact, everyone should keep all their purchases whether clothing, cars or homes within their own means and own budgets and stop following the trends and keeping up with what others do. No one knows what goes on behind the other’s closed doors. No one knows what goes on in someone else’s bank books and to try to race them or keep pace with them is stupid.
Do what is comfortable for you, be your own stylist, wear what suits your budget and suits your personality and if you find some designer piece at a good price or even second hand and you really like it, go for it. Give it a second chance to shine with a new owner.
January 9, 2011 2:12 am at 2:12 am #727033therealNAGMemberIt is an absolute waste of money to buy any designer clothing….UNLESS its from Express….then its just time to go all out!
January 9, 2011 2:44 am at 2:44 am #727034bein_hasdorimParticipantreal-brisker: You spelled calvin klein wrong and you call
yourself a REAL brisker? I can’t be associated with you.
😉
January 9, 2011 3:07 am at 3:07 am #727035real-briskerMemberb_h – what does being a real-brisker have to do with knowing how to spell?
January 9, 2011 3:11 am at 3:11 am #727036real-briskerMemberaries – The reason why is said calvin klien although yes it is a designer was because I didn’t want anyone to jump on me if I were to compare baroni to a no name. On a no name I agree that it is not worth the quality, however I wanted to know what is the difference between a regular designer vs a higher end designer.
January 9, 2011 3:33 am at 3:33 am #727037cantoresqMemberAs far as men’s clothing, the best value is bespoke, although it is the priciest. The reason it is of high vlue is that a well made custm measured suit will last far longer than anything off the rack. The issue is affording it, which I can’t.
January 9, 2011 6:19 am at 6:19 am #727038bein_hasdorimParticipantreal-brisker; If you were a REAL brisker you wouldn’t be online
period! Since you are, I must assume that you are from the new generation brisker i.e. learned in brisk Yeshiva in Yersushlayim, I”H TVBBO, or elsewhere, not the town Brisk.
Since you are a new generation brisker I must assume you carry the minhagim of your peers of being very fluent in designer names/labels, hence causing my utter shock & disbelief at
your obvious misspelling of a very popular designers name that happens to be jewish.
This Name can be found on any given day in any jewish hall,
on the inside of 75% of the ties worn on the dance floor.
It can also be found in every jewish phonebook worldwide.
A REAL brisker should be a major M’edakdek in all areas.
😉
January 9, 2011 2:27 pm at 2:27 pm #727039sarah72MemberWe all daven malbish arumim everyday so let’s keep. This prespective in mind.
as a savvy shopper that enjoys beautiful clothing I always check quality and tznius aspect I am tempted to buy tori burch. I would have to say that quality is a higher standard in designer clothes but if one learns fabric texture style and quality and knows what looks good on them they can do well with moderately priced “designer” clothes.
January 9, 2011 6:15 pm at 6:15 pm #727040stickynoteMemberYes designer clothes are a total waste of money. Paying 400 bucks for a suit is a crime (if you can afford it then thats another story) but for the typical yeshiva bochur or girl cannot afford it and just because everyone is wearing it…they have the pressure to fit in.If you want designer clothes, fancy name brands learn how to shop! go to Marshalls, Century 21, Kohls You will find normal prices for these name brands. Its such a waste to be spending a ton of money on clothes!!!
Another tip: just because its a name brand doesnt mean it cannot get stained and ruined! so if its a dollar store special shirt or a dolce and gabbana shirt or ralph lauren…(you got the point) then if you get stuck in a nail for example thats the end of it.
January 9, 2011 7:04 pm at 7:04 pm #727041Lakewood DudeMemberI bh can afford milk potatos and chicken. What can I say I’m happy. There is no reason in the world to spend extra even if you can afford it. I have a rich brother that is involved in these meshgasim, I’m telling you it is an avoda zorah! It is just as bad as following sports! There is an old expression 465 b.c. “if the glove fits, buy it”. This was said in reference to issebella iii who was very makpid on her gloves, so prince Edward xv sai this expression as a mean of saying, stop indulging.
There is utterly no need reason or rhyme for shpitzy cloths, as a matter of fact IT’S PRETUZUZ TO WALK AROUND AND MAKE OTHERS STARE AS WELL AS LIFNIE IYVER.
January 9, 2011 7:14 pm at 7:14 pm #727042real-briskerMemberlakweood dude – very well said!
January 9, 2011 9:29 pm at 9:29 pm #727043aries2756ParticipantYou should learn to be your OWN person and not feel pressured to do what others do. That is a good lesson for all of us whether we are talking about designer clothes, cars or anything else.
January 9, 2011 10:29 pm at 10:29 pm #727044HomeownerMemberA different perspective, if you will, particularly to the yeshiva and kolel students here:
Whether your suit is $4, $40, $400 or $4,000, look sharp. Look your best. When in shul, we say, “Know in front of Whom you are standing,” meaning Hashem.
When you are in the street, besides being in front of Hashem, you are in front of the rest of the world. Don’t walk around with your shirt outside your trousers and your tzitit flying in the wind. Don’t walk around with clothes than are not clean. That makes you look sloppy. Is this the impression you want to give as a Jew?
January 10, 2011 6:48 pm at 6:48 pm #727045gavra_at_workParticipantreal-brisker:
I bought (a while ago) a really nice suit for 200$. It happens to be a “brand name” (not Baroni, I’ve never heard of it) which I got “off season (I guess), and would normally go for (I have no clue). But I liked the suit.
It has the mayilah that it fits, and Ittisa likes it.
I have a relative that only fits in tailored, semi-custom? suits. If that is what works for him, Kol Hakavod.
I see just as much of a problem for paying 1000$ for a suit whether it is designer or not, unless it is needed for other reasons.
January 10, 2011 7:28 pm at 7:28 pm #727046Lakewood DudeMemberThank you real brisker for amoretti true and acurate thread has yet to be made.
January 10, 2011 8:30 pm at 8:30 pm #727047williMemberOn a general level designer names are probably better quality, but that doesn’t mean that a non-brand name can’t be of equal good quality. When it comes to clothing for example, I personally look at the fabric. A 100% cotton item that appears to be sewn well, (experience or being a mayven on material definitely helps) will normally last you a while, regardless if you paid $5 for it or $200. Same applies to a genuine leather bag, or pure wool/cashmere hat. when I see something I like I go right to the label to see what it’s composed of – not to see if it’s a fancy name.
January 10, 2011 9:28 pm at 9:28 pm #727048apushatayidParticipantWhy is the minimum standard Calvin Klein? I say you are wasting money if you don’t buy it on sale at Walmart.
January 10, 2011 9:40 pm at 9:40 pm #727049yobwejParticipantBaruch Hashem I live in Israel and can’t relate to nonsense discussions like this.
who cares?
January 10, 2011 9:54 pm at 9:54 pm #727050not IMemberInteresting, After hearing everyones response you would think that few actually spend the extra bucks on the label..
Doesn’t look like that when you go on the streets..
January 10, 2011 10:13 pm at 10:13 pm #727051real-briskerMemberapy – so what do you consider junky?
January 11, 2011 4:13 am at 4:13 am #727052apushatayidParticipantClearly you missed the point. You are taking your standards and applying it to someone else and stating they are wasting money. What if I told you anything less than Gucci (including your Calvins) is junk?
January 11, 2011 4:25 am at 4:25 am #727053real-briskerMemberapy – You are not understandding me correctly, when I chose calvin klein it was liafukay dollar stores chinnese junk! I didn’t davka mean ck it could have well been nautica, van husen, perry ellis…
January 11, 2011 6:04 pm at 6:04 pm #727054apushatayidParticipantbrisker, again, you are missing the point. You listed brand names that are all similarly priced, at the end of the day, that is a standard YOU believe is a minimum and everything else is junk. There ARE people who disagree with you and buy the labels of the big box stores such as walmart, target and costco and believe that nautica and the other labels you mention are overpriced and a waste of money. There are people at the other end of the spectrum who believe anything less than prada and gucci is junk. just leave everyone alone, let them buy what they want without your input.
January 11, 2011 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm #727055real-briskerMemberapy – I disagree
January 11, 2011 9:19 pm at 9:19 pm #727056apushatayidParticipantYou disagree that there are people who disagree with you? Please articulate what it is that you disagree with?
January 11, 2011 10:15 pm at 10:15 pm #727057real-briskerMemberapy- I hold that there is a stage that everyone agrees is JUNK.
January 12, 2011 2:36 am at 2:36 am #727058ProfessionalMembervalues are far more important than a label. Life has better goals and quality with focus on values and not on external packaging, as long as you dress clean and pleasant to the eye.
It is unfortunate that some people grew up with designers as a value, and find it hard to give it up.
If it is important to you, and you can easily afford it – go for it. Just remember: what would you want your kids to value, and dont make others feel bad (shul, area etc.)
May your Simcha and pleasures be derived by long lasting ones! (chesed, chinuch of your children, ahavas habriyos, torah learning, mitzvos, honoring parents, working on ones middos and so many more…)
IYH when time comes to look for shiduchim for our children, expensive dressing and showy lifestyle wont be on the list, and yes, I do live in NY. So its possible to live in NY and have a meaningful lifestyle…..
January 12, 2011 4:24 pm at 4:24 pm #727059apushatayidParticipantyes, there is a stage that everyone agrees is junk. the disagreement is the other way. Nautica may be perfectly fine for you, to someone else, it might be junk. To each their own.
January 12, 2011 4:41 pm at 4:41 pm #727060real-briskerMemberapy – I agree, but i do think its pretty close to the lowest. (i just picked it to contrast to the higher end)
January 12, 2011 4:56 pm at 4:56 pm #727061apushatayidParticipantI not concerned with the brand you picked, I could care less. I was only commenting on the “its a waste of money” comment that was made.
