December 23, 2010 5:46 pm at 5:46 pm #721246BEST IMAParticipantGoing to Israel was the most amazing vacation i ever took. As far as getting away with the kids i would definately say Rocking Horse Ranch. We count down all year for it (me more than the kids!)
December 23, 2010 5:46 pm at 5:46 pm #721247always hereParticipant-my 2 trips to Las Vegas with just my sister. When she took me for my birthday a number of yrs ago, we stayed @ the Luxor. when I then took her the next yr., for her birthday, we stayed @ the Flamingo.
-in 2009 I had won 2 trips to Colorado thru Chinese auctions & we took them together (one didn’t come with airfare, one didn’t come with food). my DH & I first went for 6 nights to Mt. Princeton Spa & Resort near Salidas, CO. it was rustic but great quality time together. we brought a suitcase of food with us, but then found a Safeway & WalMart. from there we went for 4 nights to the Vail Cascade Spa & Resort where they had a kosher program going on.
-all trips to Israel were great vacations, but especially when I went for 4 months & rented a modern apt. in German Colony, Jerusalem, followed by a charming apt. in the adjoining neighborhood of Ba’ka.

The kids are begging to go back but it is a pretty penny…
December 23, 2010 11:07 pm at 11:07 pm #721257popa_bar_abbaParticipantBackpack the Grand Tetons.
4 days, 3 nights. Start by the gondola, take the Teton Crest trail, and come out over the Paintbrush divide.
Best time is late August after the snow mostly melts on Paintbrush.
December 23, 2010 11:46 pm at 11:46 pm #721258YW Moderator-80Memberi was 13 when my father. A’H took me on a sierra club backpacking trip around the grand tetons. i have no idea of the route but we only saw two other people the whole time (a week). one scraggly young guy who was proud that all he had with him was some beer and a copy of nietzche.
the other was a ranger who was looking for a rogue bear. the bear found us, scared some people but no harm. i was chasing it for a while. i think i would have tried to pet it if it would have let me. i wasnt too smart.
we didnt bring water. we drank from rivers. i suppose you cant do that anymore
December 23, 2010 11:52 pm at 11:52 pm #721259popa_bar_abbaParticipantWell, you need to bring a filter. You needed to then also, they just didn’t know what Giardia is.
Our first night, after we had made camp and eaten supper, two people came by packed up and said a bear had just ruffled through their camp and they were moving on to the next permitted camping zone. We convinced them it was too late, so they set up camp with us, and we all spent the night clutching our bear spray and starting at every rustle.
It didn’t help that a man had been killed in a predatory bear attack a few days earlier, nearby.
December 24, 2010 12:23 am at 12:23 am #721260YW Moderator-80Memberno giardia then. no one ever got sick from mountain water. were talking in the general area of 50 years ago. no such thing as permitted camping zones. you set up your tent wherever your heart desired. usually at least a thousand feet or so from the nearest party in your group
December 24, 2010 12:26 am at 12:26 am #721261YW Moderator-80Memberi cleaned my bandana by banging it between two rocks in a lake. thats how they did it on tv
totally ruined it
December 24, 2010 12:46 am at 12:46 am #721262SJSinNYCMemberTV lied to you? No wonder you are against it 🙂
December 24, 2010 2:29 pm at 2:29 pm #721263popa_bar_abbaParticipantI cleaned my knife by shoving it into the ground. It gets off the grease very well. And the blood from my finger which I slashed open.
I cleaned myself by- I didn’t clean myself. Wouldn’t want to ruin my base of insect repellent and have to start again.
