Three weeks ago, the new AMI magazine “hit the shelves”. I was looking forward to reading a Furm, yet sophisticated magazine.
I was pleasantly surprised to find fairly well written articles, covering a host of different interesting topics.
Here’s my beef.
Fist off, Rabbi Avi Safran.
The first post by Rabbi Safran, Fighting Fire With Water tells us that not all Muslims are bad. The second one tells us that Prs. Obama, contrary to popular belief, really stands up for Israel.
Next is Ezra Friedlander’s piece about “Not biting the hand that feeds you”, the famous you-owe-it-to-the-democrats-to vote-for them-the he’s known for.
Next is “Dumpster Diving” by Yitta Halberstam. (She writes how she joined a radical environmental group for a day to see first hand how Dumpster Diving really teaches us not to waste food).
This weeks feature is about Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, a man, for all his greatness is not without controversy.
Why do we need this?
December 19, 2010 3:34 am at 3:34 am #722276A23ParticipantYou’re complaining about a magazine that actually gives a balanced perspective on Jewish life?
You’ve actually convinced me to go out and buy it. Yiddishkeit in Brooklyn is stifled by the ultra-conservatives. The progressives need a voice.
December 19, 2010 4:49 am at 4:49 am #722277Trying my bestMemberThe progressives have the NY Times.
December 19, 2010 4:52 am at 4:52 am #722278fine-meshigaMemberthere is nothing special in it moshpacha style articles
December 19, 2010 5:41 am at 5:41 am #722279smartcookieMemberThey were amazing and interesting articles.
Each page was filled with various informative topics.
Did you want them to write about SHIDDUCHIM ONLY????
December 19, 2010 6:55 am at 6:55 am #722280wanderingchanaParticipantLoved part 2 about the prison rabbi, and the reaction he got from heating his LaBriute meal!!
December 19, 2010 6:56 am at 6:56 am #722281wanderingchanaParticipantFWIW: All these magazine need to do a better job proofreading!!!
December 19, 2010 7:02 am at 7:02 am #722282vnishmartemmeodMemberWhile I wasn’t swept off my feet with the first issue, they definitely intrigued me enough to buy the second. And, having read it cover to cover… my opinion is that they are doing a FINE job. Perfect? No. But no publication is… especially not right away.
I will be”h continue reading, buying and encouraging others to…
Kudos to AMI and my best wishes to them!
December 19, 2010 9:30 am at 9:30 am #722283smartcookieMemberVnishmartem- exactly. You took the words off my tongue!
December 19, 2010 2:29 pm at 2:29 pm #722284fine-meshigaMemberye there is nothing special in ami but its good they are here competition is good in every business… but its seems we have here on the forum a few ami writers…
December 19, 2010 5:13 pm at 5:13 pm #722285krula rebbeMemberIt is very good that the magazine didn’t reach Israel yet, as the magazine is promoting the global warming agenda not to create unneeded waste in the world. So I’m happy that the holy land won’t have to deal with all the paper waste another magazine will create. So as a good solution when all the fine people in America finish reading their copy of Ami magazine they should not create waste in the United States but should kindly send it over to the holy land for a family and friend to read the magazine. It will cut down on paper waste and also maybe every family and friends should get together and only buy one copy of the Ami magazine so they should all be able to share one copy and not create too much paper waste.
December 19, 2010 10:11 pm at 10:11 pm #722286sh.kopMemberYitzchok M thats so interesting
I cancelled my subscription when an article featuring Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik appeared in Mishpacha.
It seems Mishpacha had a lot of fallout from that and repented, but this new magazine starting up with the same mistake just tells me not to even bother checking it out.
Not only is it not without controversy, its a big public statement.
December 19, 2010 11:20 pm at 11:20 pm #722287hello99ParticipantI’m all in favor of competition, it is great for the customers. However the market is VERY tight now. Keep in mind that in the past year we have seen Shavua Tov, Nachas and Horizons close, and Jewish Observer not long before.
December 20, 2010 12:20 am at 12:20 am #722288A23Participantsh.kop, you canceled your subscription because they had an article about Reb Chaim’s grandson, who was a gadol in his own right??
December 20, 2010 1:16 am at 1:16 am #722289truthsharerMembersh.kop,
Why would you cancel a magazine that offers an article on Rav Soleveitchik?
That seems awfully small minded of you.
December 20, 2010 1:32 am at 1:32 am #722290deiyezoogerMember“It seems Mishpacha had a lot of fallout from that and repented, but this new magazine starting up with the same mistake just tells me not to even bother checking it out.”
FYI the publisher of Ami was the editor for Mishpacha.
December 20, 2010 3:14 am at 3:14 am #722291fine-meshigaMemberthen its ‘take’ not worth checking out…
December 20, 2010 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm #722292sh.kopMemberOh, I didn’t realize that its the same person
That explains a lot
December 26, 2010 10:00 pm at 10:00 pm #722293hello99ParticipantWhat happened to this weeks issue? I heard it was recalled from the newsstands

December 27, 2010 2:29 pm at 2:29 pm #722296princesssyMemberI got this weeks so I guess it wasn’t recalled

December 29, 2010 3:59 am at 3:59 am #722299ItcheSrulikMembermeshiga: Are you capable of writing in English? If so, rewrite that drivel so people can understand how full of it you are.
December 29, 2010 4:14 am at 4:14 am #722300cantoresqMemberI think I’ll stick with the Jewish Week.
December 29, 2010 4:25 am at 4:25 am #722301smartcookieMemberFine meshige- if you would be Rubashkin, you would also want your story on all covers.
I’m not saying it’s interesting, but I’m glad he’s being written about all over the place.
December 29, 2010 4:27 am at 4:27 am #722302Trying my bestMembercantor: Pravda would be a better choice.
December 29, 2010 4:51 am at 4:51 am #722303apushatayidParticipantNever heard of AMI magazine. Guess they need a new publicist.
December 29, 2010 12:43 pm at 12:43 pm #722304fine-meshigaMemberitche- no my writing isn’t the best but I understand and I read English so my opinion is an opinion…
smartcookie- your right that its good for rubashkin but I’m not buying magazines that are good for other ppl I’m buying whats good for me and for me its not interesting……
December 29, 2010 12:47 pm at 12:47 pm #722305fine-meshigaMemberbtw I saw the article that made ami recall there magazine this week and if you would see it you wouldn’t buy it anymore
December 29, 2010 1:55 pm at 1:55 pm #722306Feif UnParticipantfine-meshiga: How dare you insult R’ Soloveitchik zt”l, one of the greatest gedolim ever in America! You should go to his kever and beg for forgiveness. There is nothing wrong with writing about him. On the contrary, more people should read about this amazing gadol, who did more for Judaism in America than almost anyone.
December 29, 2010 3:12 pm at 3:12 pm #722307ItcheSrulikMemberTMB: Pravda? Really? The Jewish Week is not that great a paper, but in comparison to Pravda it has *nothing* on the Israeli Yated.
December 29, 2010 3:24 pm at 3:24 pm #722308cantoresqMemberTMB, I don’t read the Cyrilic alphabet. Moreover, when it comes to getting accurate information in the Orthodox world, it’s clear that one cannot depend on the Orthodox publications, but their very own admission. The recent ban of a frum news site was essentially based on the accuracy of their reporting.
December 29, 2010 3:31 pm at 3:31 pm #722309apushatayidParticipantThis is degenerating into terrible lashon hara about another yid.
December 29, 2010 3:38 pm at 3:38 pm #722310not IMemberSeems like they are trying to attract everyone, satisfying no one!
One article about R Soleveitchik, teh next about Lubavitch and Satmar.. NOt getting many satmerers reading a paper that stresses R S work!
I recomend they work on one niche in Frum society.. But definitely not all!
December 29, 2010 3:38 pm at 3:38 pm #722311Trying my bestMemberDecember 29, 2010 4:16 pm at 4:16 pm #722313bptParticipantWe are not subcribers (yet) but so far, we’ve bought each issue. I admire the fact that they had the guts to publish the story about a young woman who endured years of covering up for her uncapable parents, and when circumstances (not of her own doing) made it clear that her younger siblings were at risk, she called in the authorities.
Much like the “blogs” that exposed the child abuse that was being covered up in our community, articles like this make it eaiser for other victims to deal with / prevent further abusive situations. It also makes the people who would otherwise try to cover up situations like this think twice about what they are about to do.
Read the article yourself and decide. I think she did the right thing, and the “senior memebers” of the community have themselves to blame for the mess this family now has to deal with.
