Has anyone had the lap band surgery? If yes would you recommend it?
December 17, 2010 3:17 am at 3:17 am #718752Rak Od Pa'amMember2 of my nephews had it done.
1) is back where he was before surgery. How it is physcially possible I do not know (reverse the surgery so that he can eat?) .
2) Looks like a mentch. Right after suregery he told me it took a lot of retraining but it seems that he finally got it pat.
December 17, 2010 7:34 am at 7:34 am #718753havesomeseichelMemberI know some people who have had this procedure. Those who have had it- it changed their life for the better.
If you have some self control it can be life changing. You may not see the same dramatic results as in the bypass, but it is less permanent.
It changes your life and can enhance your future- less medical problems due to being overweight, more energy.
Please: Do not ask advice on the CR. This is a serious medical decision that you need to take up with your doctor and family.
December 17, 2010 7:58 am at 7:58 am #718754sof davar hakol nishmaMemberIf I know what you’re talking about, I would check it out really, really well before. I know someone who did it and constantly has complications. They lost about 100 lbs. but still have a way to go and it’s been years.

December 17, 2010 2:42 pm at 2:42 pm #718755A23ParticipantI know nine people who had this done. Even after a year, most of them are still obese and overweight. In fact, only one or two can qualify for the ‘normal’ category.
I think that if you’re really serious about losing weight, you should just follow the time-tested method of losing: take in less calories than you expend. As a bonus tip: take in less by dieting, expend more through exercise.
December 17, 2010 2:45 pm at 2:45 pm #718756member1Memberi have done the band surgery and i have lost over 100 lbs its the way to go
December 19, 2010 2:17 am at 2:17 am #718757Shticky GuyParticipantAn English friend of mine has had a ‘virtual’ band fitted a few months ago under hypnosis in the UK and he has lost tons of weight! He said it seems to be risk free and is as good as a real band and he highly recommends it
December 19, 2010 2:26 am at 2:26 am #718758popa_bar_abbaParticipantvirtual band?
Will he lose virtual weight?
December 19, 2010 3:18 am at 3:18 am #718759oomisParticipantWhat is a virtual band?
December 19, 2010 3:35 am at 3:35 am #718760full_of_rageMemberNext week will be the 10th anniversary of having my banding done. I started at close to 300 lbs and now weigh 165-170lbs. I wear smaller clothing now than i did to my own bar mitzvah.Don’t think that this is an easy way out, it takes a lot of work and devotion to have lasting success. you will have to give up foods you like eat smaller portions, and completely change your way of life. Good luck!!
December 19, 2010 8:50 am at 8:50 am #718761havesomeseichelMemberfull of rage- MAZEL TOV! It is a big accomplishment!
I would like to say kudos to some people in my life who have had the bypass… they have lost the weight of their spouse (maybe plus a kid too…) over a couple years. I know it is no easy way out of weight issues as it takes a lot of self control.
A23- dieting and exercise alone may not always help some people. The person I know who has had the bypass tried over the course of decades different diets etc. It is not as simple as you think.
December 19, 2010 8:58 am at 8:58 am #718762Shticky GuyParticipantWhat’s a virtual band? Google it. As I said, it’s a relatively new procedure involving only hypnosis where your body is made to believe that a gastric band has been fitted, even though you yourself know that it hasn’t. It has produced amazing results, just like the real thing!
December 19, 2010 3:50 pm at 3:50 pm #718763popa_bar_abbaParticipantIf your body believes you have the band, why don’t you also have the side effects?
December 19, 2010 4:05 pm at 4:05 pm #718764tikvuchkaMemberi had the band done in march of 09. i lsot weight but i also went to the gym every day. they tell you before you do the surgery that it only works with DIET AND EXCERSIZE, and they know what they are talking about. Although, now I am expecting and I had alot of discomfrt from the port in the beginning that they dont tell you about.
December 19, 2010 7:37 pm at 7:37 pm #718765PosterMemberI know a few people who really lost an amazing amount of weight which they otherwise could not have lost. But keep in mind it is a surgery and is not the natural way of losing weight.
December 19, 2010 8:27 pm at 8:27 pm #718766The chamelonMemberIt is easier to convince your body that there was surgery than to convince it that all that excessive eating is harmful????
December 19, 2010 8:36 pm at 8:36 pm #718767iluvtorahMemberjust curious, what do the Poskim say about this?
December 19, 2010 8:49 pm at 8:49 pm #718768Thin IceMemberI know someone who used to be very overweight, had this procedure, and is now very skinny
December 20, 2010 12:21 am at 12:21 am #718769full_of_rageMemberwhat do poskim have to do with this?
December 20, 2010 8:02 am at 8:02 am #718770Shticky GuyParticipantFull of rage: this is supposed to be a YESHIVA site for FRUM ppl. Of course poskim should be consulted before any major decisions in life, especially ones involving anaesthetic or other potentially dangerous or serious outcomes. Chassidim are noheg to ask aitzeh before even minor or seemingly trivial matters. Making our own decisions can lead to big shailos where we involve ourselves in situations where we are not even aware that there could be halachic ramifications due to our lack of knowledge.
December 20, 2010 1:35 pm at 1:35 pm #718771full_of_rageMemberShticky Guy
You make it sound as if there is some sort of issur in surgical weight loss. Would you consult a posek if chas v’shalom you had a heart attack and were told you need immediate bypass surgery. Would you say “Dr. please wait I just sent a shailoh to eretz yisrael” How about if the doctor suggested that you cut
down on red meat (still leaving you the option for Bosor V’Dagim on shabbos), or to lower your salt intake? Of course one can and should consult a Rov for advice but why are you looking to create an Issur?
December 20, 2010 2:23 pm at 2:23 pm #718772The chamelonMemberChassidim are noheg to ask aitzeh before even minor or seemingly trivial matters.
The Rebbe I am closest with (Don’t want to call myself his Chasid, if I were I wouldn’t be here) sends people with ????? ????? to poskim
December 20, 2010 3:20 pm at 3:20 pm #718773iluvtorahMemberthe issur in question ( among any other Halacha or Hashkapha issues) is prohibition of Chavalah; “Torah prohibits wounding another person (see Devarim 25:3) and the Gemara (Bava Kama 91a) states that this prohibition applies even to wounding oneself”
December 20, 2010 5:18 pm at 5:18 pm #718774HealthParticipantMr. Shticky Guy / Mr. iluvtorah -Gezuntehaight. A person should ask a shaila before any major thing esp. when it comes to their health. After you ask, please come and post what they said. Also, please don’t forget to ask before you become overweight, if you’re allowed to overeat. Also, please don’t forget to ask about smoking, before you take that first cigarette and then you can’t stop!
December 20, 2010 5:59 pm at 5:59 pm #718775havesomeseichelMemberHealth- WELL SAID. Very apropos!
