My female co-workers spend alot of time each day talking to one another about non work related things , example Mrs. A comes in and sits at her desk Mrs.B comes in next and they chat for 20 minutes before they start working and then Mrs. C. comes in and the 3 of them chat for another twenty minutes and so on. But if i take a break and play a game of solitaire on my computer for 5 minutes my boss gets bent out of shape, why is their time wasting more acceptable than mine?
December 16, 2010 4:50 pm at 4:50 pm #720616blinkyParticipantthegoq- maybe your boss sees you are on the CR often so thats your break already:)
December 16, 2010 5:40 pm at 5:40 pm #720617aries2756ParticipantYour boss might not hear what they are talking about and he might not know it is not business related but he sees that you are not conducting business
December 16, 2010 6:03 pm at 6:03 pm #720618apushatayidParticipantThe grass is always greener on the other side it seems.
December 16, 2010 6:04 pm at 6:04 pm #720619apushatayidParticipantPerhaps you get paid 4x what they do, so you only get 5 minutes of his time to waste, but they each get 20.
December 16, 2010 6:30 pm at 6:30 pm #720620says whoMemberDo you expect your boss to tell the women not to talk? It’s just part of the deal.
In my case, my workmates have no problem making long phone calls bacause my boss doesn’t see them. I am all day next to my boss, and he get’s nervous when I make a short call, so I just go somewhere else when I need to make an important call.
Bottom line – See what get’s your boss upset and work around it.
December 16, 2010 6:33 pm at 6:33 pm #720621SacrilegeMemberAll factors egual, why do mean get paid more for doing the same job as women?
(I dont have a problem with it, but because we were on the topic of double standards…)
December 16, 2010 7:26 pm at 7:26 pm #720622Peanut ButterMemberSac
Because us “MEAN” are … mean? lol
But in all seriousness, its called discrimination. I mean why do I get paid more than the guy that does the same work as I do?
December 16, 2010 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm #720623TheGoqParticipantaries- the boss is very aware of their talking but married women can get away with more than single men at my workplace apparently
apushata- i get paid less i was started at a lower salary then them bacause i am single
December 16, 2010 8:44 pm at 8:44 pm #720624apushatayidParticipantSounds like TheGog is unhappy at work. Perhaps if you spent more time working instead of writing on YWN, you may accomplish something at work that says to your boss, hey, mr gog is really good, lets make sure we make him really happy here so that he wont go elsewhere and help our competition. Just a suggestion.
December 16, 2010 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm #720625SacrilegeMemberPB
So many typos in that one comment. You didnt catch “egual”?
December 16, 2010 8:50 pm at 8:50 pm #720626popa_bar_abbaParticipantI don’t believe men get paid more for the same job. Lawyers don’t, doctors don’t, speech therapists don’t.
The numbers they put out of .83 to the dollar are for the workplace as a whole. The reason for that is that men have better jobs and are more into their career.
December 16, 2010 9:02 pm at 9:02 pm #720627not IMemberNot so related but they say the women police are the worst! BC they are women they have to prove to everyone that they are just as tough!
As well ppl haven’t yet gotten used to the idea of the women being the bread-winners. They think the men get paid more cause they need it.. No fair!
December 16, 2010 9:05 pm at 9:05 pm #720628SacrilegeMemberpopa
Clearly you have never heard of the Glass Ceiling Effect.
December 16, 2010 9:28 pm at 9:28 pm #720630popa_bar_abbaParticipantGlass ceiling has to do with promotions and is not about unequal pay for the same job.
December 16, 2010 9:31 pm at 9:31 pm #720631seeallsidesParticipantno boss likes it when there are 20 minute conversations, and then the next 20 minutes when the third person comes in – certainly they don’t like when you play solitaire – These are very blatant wrongdoings, and the boss unfortunately has to pick his battles cause you can’t yell at all the workers all the time – but that doesn’t take away from it being very wrong – i remember one boss telling me that he once had someone check his phone bills, and there were employees that were on the phone for local calls for over 5 out of 8 hours – although i also need a break now and then for some interoffice chitchat or a walk down the coffee room, i try very hard to make up the time so that my boss doesn’t lose out.
December 16, 2010 9:31 pm at 9:31 pm #720632TheGoqParticipantchesed-yes its human to talk to a co worker but they do this for i would guess an hour and a half to two hours a day, they huddle together at one of their desks and have long drawn out ocnversations,
“They think the men get paid more cause they need it.. No fair!”
where i work (a yeshiva) the same goes for married people as opposed to single people
December 16, 2010 9:56 pm at 9:56 pm #720633SacrilegeMemberpopa
Two minutes on Wikipedia isnt going to outshine a semester w a droning professor 😉
There are many forms of glass ceiling barriers, one of them being different pay for comparative work.
December 17, 2010 12:09 am at 12:09 am #720634popa_bar_abbaParticipantWell, I don’t believe it, and have never heard of an instance. I suppose I can’t argue with your professor since I don’t know what he said or what studies he was referencing.
Oh, well.
December 17, 2010 5:35 am at 5:35 am #720635real-briskerMemberI think the best answer you will get is if you ask your boss straight out?
December 17, 2010 9:54 am at 9:54 am #720636yeshivaguy1Participantchesedname I’m surprised the mods let that one through
December 17, 2010 11:28 am at 11:28 am #720637RalphieMemberIf the boss says anything to a woman – justified or not – he immediately gets sued. If he says something to you, you get back to work.
December 17, 2010 11:29 am at 11:29 am #720638RalphieMemberreal-brisker, thanks for the Dear Abby answer.

Its a very real theory and it is happening across the Country.
It is your right not to believe it… even if it does make you sound ill-informed.
December 17, 2010 2:39 pm at 2:39 pm #720643cofeefanMemberby my work, someone i work with shops ALL day (and talks on the phone etc) and i end up doing their work, and when i finish i like to browse the stores too. until one day someone made a comment to me saying “all you do at work is shop all day” and they were not joking…. i said “i dont _______ does i only do after i finish both our work” they thought i was kidding….. i was really offended and since then i dont even LOOK at anything! i still have not forgiven that person.
December 17, 2010 3:18 pm at 3:18 pm #720645nfgo3MemberThere’s more wine on this thread than on all the dinner tables in Boro Park on Seder nights.
December 17, 2010 3:35 pm at 3:35 pm #720646popa_bar_abbaParticipantSacrilege:
I have never heard of an instance that was not readily explainable, and apparently neither have you.
When they talk about it on the news, they talk about comparing national average salary, which is deliberately misleading since it is not comparing similar jobs.
The lack of concrete examples, combined with a known pattern of disinformation, and a clear axe to grind, make any broad statements pretty suspect.

December 17, 2010 4:22 pm at 4:22 pm #720648not IMemberreal brisker.. You will be very unpopular at work ampong your co-workers. NO ONE likes tattle talers. Not in school and even more so at work!!
December 17, 2010 5:48 pm at 5:48 pm #720649real-briskerMemberNot1 – The OP is talking about where the boss knows that the other people talking.
December 17, 2010 6:07 pm at 6:07 pm #720650SacrilegeMemberpopa
The reason why you never hear the example of Miss Sacrilege went to Harvard as did Mr. Popa the both graduated Summa Cum Laude, work for the same firm yet, Mr. Popa makes 200K while Miss Sacrilege makes 125K is because there would be major lawsuits should that information come to light.
There ARE actual studies (based on the national census) that woman make 75 cents on the dollar compared to men in comparative job positions coming from comparitive education backgrounds.
December 17, 2010 7:11 pm at 7:11 pm #720651popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe only studies I have heard or seen, including a wikipedia search, are studies done which do not factor for job, education, experience, career plan, etc.
December 17, 2010 7:11 pm at 7:11 pm #720652Trying my bestMemberThat’s because Mr. Popa is a much more diligent and productive employee than Miss Sacrilege, despite seemingly similar educational backgrounds.
December 17, 2010 7:24 pm at 7:24 pm #720653popa_bar_abbaParticipantTMB:
It usually has to do with better education, and more, with a stronger career interest. Many women do not pursue career opportunities because they wish to have a family. Even if they don’t stop working, they don’t try to get better positions, or they go to part time.
December 19, 2010 8:58 pm at 8:58 pm #720654Midwest2ParticipantAnother source of the disparity:
Men negotiate about their salary, benefits etc. when they’re hired and after. Women don’t. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
On the other hand, a woman who negotiates is frequently seen as being “aggressive” – which is still negative for women. Men are expected to be aggressive.
So yes, there’s a double standard. But with what’s happening in the economy now, I’d guess that men aren’t doing too much negotiating either.
The bottom line: check out the going currrent salary in your field, location, level of experience, and hold out for it. A woman shouldn’t just assume she has to take what she’s offered if it’s below the going (local) rate.
December 20, 2010 4:21 am at 4:21 am #720655Pashuteh YidMemberThe bottom line is that everything is supply and demand, and based on merit. One can ask for anything he wants, and the boss can likewise refuse to pay anything he wants. When the boss feels he is getting his money’s worth, and the employee feels he is willing to work for that amount, then that is one’s salary.
Apparently bosses feel that men are better at certain things than women. They don’t view it as the same work. Certainly, women are better at certain things than men. I am sure there are professions in which women are paid more than men.
December 24, 2010 2:21 am at 2:21 am #720656metrodriverMemberapushatayid; (To Goq) You and several other posters are misreading the name. It’s a “Que” at the end.
to goq; From your whining (and bringing out the point that you are (apparently) discriminated against because you are single, there is only one “Eitzah”. You should get a “Goquette”. In plain Yiddish. Get married. Look around in the office if there is a candidate for a goquette. Or join a volunteer organization. (while posting on YWN Coffee Room is also considered voluntary, it does not advance your Shidduch prospects as going out and socializing in any capacity will.). Also, another reason the (married)ladies in your office are allowed to yak for twenty minutes before they shmooze for another Half Hour, might be because they can get work done while yakking. Ask my sister. According to her, this is the only way work gets done. (At 3AM).
