I was out driving today on a popular Avenue in Brooklyn and the way people drive makes you wonder how there arent 10x more accidents.
My main issue is that people dont use their blinkers. Dont they realize that blinkers are there to let other drivers know what you are doing so they dont plow right into your back bumper?!
You have people leaving parking spots without blinking, people changing lanes without blinking and people making turns without blinking. They dont realize that they endanger their lives as well as the lives of others. I am not a Rav and I cant posken but I am leaning in the direction of thinking that those who dont drive with obeying the rules of driving and caring about the other motorists safety are close to being Rodfim. I witnessed at least 2 near accidents on this one avenue because people dont blink.
I just had to vent to get it out of my system. If you are a “non blinker” please, please its so easy to hit your blinker just do it and stop playing games with your life and the lives of others!!!
November 30, 2010 4:21 am at 4:21 am #715647HomeownerMemberWIY, did you not know that both the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law and the New York City Traffic Regulations are considered mere suggestions in Brooklyn? If you have any doubt, read some of the comments in the Driveway Blocking in Borough Park thread I recently posted.
November 30, 2010 4:33 am at 4:33 am #715648real-briskerMemberWIY – Did you read my post in the “how old to get a liscence” thread, regarding all the things people are not careful with when they drive, Not just blinkers.
November 30, 2010 4:51 am at 4:51 am #715649kapustaParticipantYou actually answered your own question. Its NYC. A friend of mine told me she was driving in NYC (not in Brooklyn) and couldn’t stop laughing when people just crossed when they felt like it, regardless of there being a car speeding down the block. Everyone makes their own set of rules.
I do agree about using a blinker as often as possible, but I think its one of those things that are associated with new drivers and new drivers only. Its a shame because, as you say, it can literally save lives.
November 30, 2010 5:28 am at 5:28 am #715650AinOhdMilvadoParticipantWIY…
You are absolutely correct, BUT…
Not signaling is the least of the terrible driving infractions I see all the time.
One of the worst is making illegal U-turns in the middle of busy streets.
Not only is this illegal, not only is it a chilul HaSh-m as people doing it keep people waiting in BOTH directions while they take several back and forth maneuvers to complete the turn, but it is extremely dangerous! A friend of mine was KILLED a few months ago making such a U-turn when he apparently didn’t see someone racing down the street, and they apparently didn’t realize he was pulling out to make the U.
So… all of you out there who don’t care about the law, who don’t care about chilul HaSh-m, HOW do you feel about leaving a young widow and fatherless children?!?!?
November 30, 2010 7:27 am at 7:27 am #715651cherrybimParticipantActually, when comparing state auto accidents with pedestrian fatalities per capita population rates, New York State is shown as #14 together with New Jersey and Texas, and about the same as six other states.
November 30, 2010 8:08 pm at 8:08 pm #715653WIYMemberI would like to add that STOP SIGNS DONT MEAN SLOW DOWN AND BLOW PAST IT AT 15-20 MPH INSTEAD OF 30-40! It means come to a full stop even for a second!
Your “rush” isnt more important than someone else’s car or their life!
December 1, 2010 12:54 am at 12:54 am #715654deiyezoogerMemberWelcome to the city!
????? ????? ???
I’m so glad not to live in there anymore, my blood presure goes up just driving through it, and dont even talk about parking.
December 1, 2010 2:47 am at 2:47 am #715655metrodriverMemberI suggested a long time ago that the Auto manufacturing companies sell cars without turn signal (Blinkers) in the Heimishe areas of Brooklyn. Boro Park, Willi, Flatbush, etc. Because the Heimishe Oilom doesn’t use them, anyway. But then again, there’s no time to signal when you pull out of a parking spot @ 60 MPH, 2-ft. in front of the approaching vehicle. Enumerating all the faults and inconsideration in driving of the Heimishe Oylom could fill volumes in cyberspace. After having said and read all of that, there’s no place I’d rather live (while in Golus) than good old Boro Park.
December 1, 2010 3:30 am at 3:30 am #715656HelpfulMemberMetro, what you describe is not a heimesha attitude, but rather a general NYC wide attitude.
December 1, 2010 5:13 am at 5:13 am #715657Mayan_DvashParticipantMetro, don’t be such an anti-semite, this happens all over the country and probably all over the world.

December 1, 2010 5:29 am at 5:29 am #715658real-briskerMemberI agree with metro, its even worse in lakewood and monsey.
December 1, 2010 5:37 am at 5:37 am #715659Pashuteh YidMemberThis reminds me of a certain car model a number of years back which had the horn on the turn signal. You pressed the stick in to blow the horn.
One furious man wrote into a car magazine, PUT THE HORN BACK WHERE G-d INTENDED IT TO BE.

December 1, 2010 4:07 pm at 4:07 pm #715661havesomeseichelMemberWhy do NYers drive crazily? Maybe it is evidence that they are crazy! When I come to NY, I wont drive. The frum people drive so crazily, when mapping out a route to take (since they drive) we specifically avoid 18ave, Ave J…most of boro park…. because there are too many crazy Jewish drivers! Yes, the non-jews are not the best drivers either, but from my experience Frum yidden think that stop signs are suggestions, yellow lights mean “speed up to get through the intersection” and red lights mean “if I had the intention to cross but didn’t pass even the crosswalk while it was green I can just go and block the intersection”.
I don’t mean ill on other yidden but there should be plenty of people ticketing! ticket all those who block the box (it worked in manhattan), triple park, park by hydrants, dont use their turn signal or do illegal turns.
Then ticket the pedestrians who cross illegally against the light. Yes, drivers, you still have to stop for them, but they are doing something illegal. I know in some cities they warn you about ticketing pedestrians and there are warnings in the frum community that they will do it on shabbos.
It stops many accidents and can save lives!
December 1, 2010 4:29 pm at 4:29 pm #715662TheGoqParticipantBecause New Yorkers are not normal DUH!!!!
December 1, 2010 5:00 pm at 5:00 pm #715663AinOhdMilvadoParticipantI don’t know what it is about New York.
I’ve driven in other big cities like L.A. and Chicago, and (in my experience at least) drivers there didn’t seem to feel (for example) that it’s a threat to their masculinity if they let you pull on to a highway from the entrance ramp or let you change lanes.
We better learn to “chill out” when we’re behind the wheel, or one can end up REALLY chilled, r’l

That’s nice.
Nonetheless, I’ll continue to drive safely (including actually stopping at stop signs, wearing seat belts, etc.), thank you. 🙂

With all due respect to Torah learning and Torah observance,
I really hope no one is depending on that (a naiys) to counter-act brainless driving habits!
December 1, 2010 10:42 pm at 10:42 pm #715667popa_bar_abbaParticipantThere is no driving like NYC. I have driven all over, but my steering wheel belongs in midtown.
December 2, 2010 1:05 am at 1:05 am #715668deiyezoogerMemberI was once looking for a parking space near Miomanides hospital when I finaly found one two blocks away I pulled up next to the other car to do a paralel parking when I started to back up my wife yelled WATCH!! What happend was another car jumped into that space while I was in the middile of parking there. when I looked at that driver he just showed me his middle finger. And no it was not a frum jew, it was a chinese doctor. what happens is that even normal people get so fed up being abused by other drivers that they figure the only way to survive is to become abusive themselves.
December 2, 2010 2:17 am at 2:17 am #715669hudiParticipantThis isn’t only in NYC
What bothers me a lot is when PEOPLE PUT ON THEIR BLINKERS AFTER THEY BREAK SUDDENLY TO TURN. You’re going your regular 10 miles above the speed limit, close to the slow car in front of you. All of a sudden, 10 feet before a side street, some one short stops, puts on their blinkers and turns. Is your mind backwards??? I don’t need a warning before you’re turning if you’re going to short stop before you put on the blinkers. I got the message loud and clear when I slammed on my breaks.

In that situation, what you do is tell the guy if he parks there you will slash his tires. Then, you can’t park there either or he will slash yours, but, you clearly win.

December 3, 2010 9:15 pm at 9:15 pm #715674I love NYC. It keeps the new york people away from the rest of us
December 5, 2010 1:23 am at 1:23 am #715675myfriendMemberThere is good reason the majority of frum people in America live in NY.
December 5, 2010 6:10 pm at 6:10 pm #715676popa_bar_abbaParticipantThere is good reason the majority of frum people in America live in NY.
Because it is close to Ellis Island?
December 5, 2010 9:02 pm at 9:02 pm #715677Exactly. Because it keeps the majority of frum people in America away from the rest of us.
December 6, 2010 1:58 am at 1:58 am #715678deiyezoogerMemberAs I said before it has noting to do with being frum, all new yorkers drive that way.
December 7, 2010 3:18 am at 3:18 am #715681Midwest2ParticipantAnother peculiarity of NYC cars – it seems that there’s a law that the horn has to be connected to the accelerator, so if you take your foot off the gas the horn automatically goes on. Also, if the car is stationary for more than ten seconds (for instance, at a red light) the horn also automatically sounds.
The safest way to drive in NYC is to take the subway.
December 7, 2010 7:12 am at 7:12 am #715682thinking aloudParticipantI don’t get people who complain about Brooklyn or more broadly NY driving. It’s as if in other parts of the counrty when the light turns green in a hugley congested area with families that have alot of children and places to be,, you are supposed to take your time and like not go
My point: when the light finally turns green GO…
December 7, 2010 1:08 pm at 1:08 pm #715683HelpfulMemberThinking – chill out. OOT its okay to finish your slice before going through the light.
December 7, 2010 6:44 pm at 6:44 pm #715684thinking aloudParticipantHa ha , you know good and well that the chevraman who is eating his slice while driving is gonna hit the gas as soon as it turns green….the problem starts when people not used to the fast-paced life of NYC start driving down a busy street as if they are taking a tour..
December 9, 2010 1:21 am at 1:21 am #715685Midwest2ParticipantIf “taking a tour” means paying attention to the other cars on the road – not to mention pedestrians – then maybe the fast-paced life can sometimes come to a sudden stop, hopefully with no injury except to the car.
NYC is the only place I’ve ever heard of where people get run over while they’re standing on the sidewalk.

Statistically, there is no greater incidents of such accidents in nyc than in other large US cities.
December 9, 2010 4:41 am at 4:41 am #715687deiyezoogerMemberHaving lived in the city most of my life I cant recall ever seeing a car driving on the sidewalk.
