Where, in Brooklyn, can one purchase a Borsalino type hat for less than $150? It doesn’t have to be a Borsalino, but anything in a similar form.

November 18, 2010 4:40 pm at 4:40 pm #1082655cantoresqMemberOn a related note, what is it about the high crown and super wide brim that found favor among yeshiva leit? Personally, I think the Boraslino is too much hat for most heads. I much prefer the look of the Stetson fedoras. My true love however would be for the return of the homburg; the king of the hats.
November 18, 2010 4:54 pm at 4:54 pm #1082656gavra_at_workParticipantBishita, I don’t wear one (I wear a no name brand).
I don’t see how it is different than driving a Lexus. I once heard a shiur from Rav Yaakov Bender where he said this idea as well. 🙂
November 18, 2010 4:57 pm at 4:57 pm #1082657YW Moderator-80Memberi drive a 2000 toyota corolla
i wear a borsalino because it looks chashuv and because it lasts far longer than cheaper hats. no one knows its a borsalino unless they take it off my head and look inside
i dont see how it is anything at all like driving a lexus

I agree, a Borsalino, if taken care of will last years. I have had Borsalino Shabbos hats last 3-4 years.

C”V! I don’t even care if you did drive a Lexus, I would be happy for you 🙂
As I pointed out in that thread, I don’t have a Megilla either; for me the extra spent on the better hat is not worthwhile.
I also don’t wear it on the street on a regular basis, you might, so a “better” hat would be worthwhile for you.
I don’t mean to “start up”. Just consider that a Borsilino itself may not be required.
I notice now the OP points this out himself
“It doesn’t have to be a Borsalino, but anything in a similar form.”
November 18, 2010 5:10 pm at 5:10 pm #1082660A23ParticipantNow they have hats with the Borsalino logo in a small place on the outside band, I personally hate that, but I’ve seen several people with those.
November 18, 2010 5:20 pm at 5:20 pm #1082661YW Moderator-80Memberi wouldnt drive a lexus even if i could, call it reverse snobbism, i would be embarrassed. i wouldnt wear a borsalino with an outside logo for the same reason
yes an equivalent hat of another brand would be fine with me. i just dont know hats that well. i know borsalino is a good hat from reputation, and now from experience
November 18, 2010 6:08 pm at 6:08 pm #1082662popa_bar_abbaParticipantI drive a ’98 Honda civic. A Dodge would have been cheaper, but would not have been running anymore in 2009 when I bought it.
I wear the mid level Borsalino from Bencraft. I bought one in 2003, which people still ask if it is new. I bought another in 2004 which I stained, so I now bought another a few months ago. I expect it to last very long.
Buy one; it’s worth the price.
November 18, 2010 6:46 pm at 6:46 pm #1082663I can only tryMemberA Borse is a Borse, of course, of course,
And nice black yeshivishe Borse of course
That is, of course, the only Borse that should be on your head.
Go right to the source, request the Borse
He’ll give you the hat we all endorse.
This is the rule we must enforce.
Accept nothing in its stead.
People yakkity yak a streak; “what a wonderful hat” they say
And on your head will be your Borse; you’ll look shtotty all day.
A Borse is a Borse, of course, of course,
And one can be bought with no remorse.
You never thought of buying a Borse?
Well listen to this.
You need one to be “redt”.
November 18, 2010 6:46 pm at 6:46 pm #1082664myfriendMemberWhat’s the lowest cost Bosralino? And what’s the lowest cost non-Borsalino black fedora hat?
November 18, 2010 7:36 pm at 7:36 pm #1082665HelpfulMemberCantoresq, Black fedora Stetson’s are to be found in the Yeshivish community. Humburg’s are a rabbonisha hat. Perhaps you can start a trend to mainstream it. 🙂
November 18, 2010 7:39 pm at 7:39 pm #1082666HelpfulMemberThanks WIY and Mod 80. Do you or anyone know what – and where – are the lowest cost “black hats”?

You need to call all the stores and compare prices. Additionally they dont all have the same hats. Bencraft for example has a great selection but you will pay full price. Its not a low end store. Try Ferster, Kova or others you will probably do better there if looking to save $.
November 18, 2010 8:03 pm at 8:03 pm #1082669lkwdfellowMemberWhat happened to straw hats? They used to be much more popular, but recently I see less people wearing them. They are much lighter & look pretty neat. Of course, I mean from Memorial Day until labor Day. To wear one after that is question of Baal Tosif 🙂
November 18, 2010 8:59 pm at 8:59 pm #1082670cantoresqMemberAs it happens, I wore my black hat today. I rarely ever wear it, but somehow I had the urge this morning. It produced a few stares from the chassidim at Mincha who are used to seeing me in a gray or taupe hat. But thanks Helpful for letting me know that a Stetson is also oisgehalten. Is the tear drop crown an acceptable variation as well? As to the Homburg, when I was in college I made a pact with my chavruseh and best friend at the time, that we would both buy homburg hats on our 40th birthdays. When I turned 40 last year I called him and asked him to be mochel the chov as I don’t feel “old” enough to wear one, and we agreed to push off the purchase for another five years and reassess the situation then. And indeed I do most definitely wear a straw colored straw hat from Memorial Day until Labor day. I actually have two of them. One was a gift from my boss.

You aren’t kidding. And in more ways than one. It is very, very cold here today and we are having our first snowstorm. Nu – my bones are aching and creaking. At least Mr. Ed was either shot or sent to a glue factory before he began to kvetch.

Thank you for the kind words – glad you got a chuckle out of it.
Speaking of “showing our age”, I asked a jr. if the terms “shtotty” and “Borse” are still used. The former is, the latter apparently isn’t.

myfriend–
It’s really not worth explaining here, but if you’re curious you can Google “Mr. Ed”.
================================
So as not to (totally) hijack this thread:
I recommend getting a quality hat. It will look good for a lot longer, and when it does begin to lose its shape over time it can be steamed and blocked to look great once again.
A cheap hat will look nice for a much shorter time, and once it starts going, it’s pretty much gone.

November 19, 2010 5:07 am at 5:07 am #1082684A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantKova won my total appreciation a few years ago when we came in with one of my (then mesivta aged) son’s hats, which had been typically tossed around in yeshiva, thrown into the locker after davening, and in need of some serious TLC. Here we were ideal pickings to sell a new hat to, and instead they took his old hat, fixed it up nicely with a cleaning, blocking etc. and sent us home with a hat that still looked decent enough to wear for davening, saving us upwards of $100 I’m sure.

November 19, 2010 3:08 pm at 3:08 pm #1082686Josh31ParticipantOn the lighter side:
Some hats have such large rims that they must be viewed as a separate roof enclosure, and the wearer can not be considered to be eating in the Succah. I may be way off base on this.
November 21, 2010 12:23 am at 12:23 am #1082690mosygoldParticipantIf considering a new hat, I recommend suede. They last a lot longer and look a lot better. I have mine for ten years, looks a little worn.

also how long did it take?
November 21, 2010 5:28 pm at 5:28 pm #1082693twistedParticipantWay back when I was a bochur, there was an old hatter in Jersey City that advertised in the Jewish Press, a one or two line add that told of cheap hats for Yeshiva guys. I made the trip out there on the Path train, into a dying low life neighborhood. The business was in a huge industrial building stuffed with every thing you could call a hat in every color of the rainbow. He must have serviced the movie industry and the Mardi Gras as well. Still, true to the add, he had Yeshivish, and MO hats (time was when lots of MOs wore hats). For $12 and $15 I got two hats with Stetson ( real or fake I don’t know) bands and liners. One is still in the family as a Purim hat. It was real good stuff. I would also love to find old stock of the 3/4-1″ brims. Occasionally you see such an antique, and they are way cool.

If you look at pictures of the Alte Mirrers – they all wore grey hats, as did most Yeshivaleit back then.
