If you want to go, there’s no one stopping you.

Obviously people don’t go there because there isn’t as much of a demand to go there. More people prefer Florida beaches to Idaho mountains.

….and there is plenty of Kosher food.

I guess if Washington state which allegedly is gorgeous, would have warm beaches and 75 degrees in the winter, with a large kosher supermarket and several glat restaurants and cholov yisroel with many shuls and mikvas – then Washington would be an alternative.

    everyone always

Oh, and for the record, I’ve gone on a few vacations over the last 12 years… and never once went to Florida (not that I went to Idaho either….). Clearly not “everyone” or “always.”

theprof1, Washington State is beautiful. And there are beaches (I think – but shouldn’t frum people avoid them?) and have great weather in the summer and there were restaurants there when I went (way back when). There are shuls too.

Because Florida has many features that people from Brooklyn want. And Idaho does not have many (if any) of those features.

I’m not sure why that’s so difficult to understand. Did you think that people just picked their vacation destinations at random? People go to places where there are features and amenities that they want.

If you’re looking for warmth this time of year, you won’t find that in Idaho. That said, there are plenty of wonderful warm destinations that are far less crowded than Florida, and no more expensive.

If you’re looking for alternative destinations, just ask.

    Who goes to Florida?

Florida has a good airport though, it connects to the Caribbean destinations.

I went to Belize. It was great. We stayed on Caye Caulker. Our “hotel” cost 12.50 a night, and slept 3.

The last vacation we went on, Eeees and I went to St. Thomas. We even found a place that has good sized outdoor private pools for each room.

But that aside, the islands (we also took a day trip to St. John) were just stunning. We had a wonderful time.

Wolf- I meant to thank you for that. A while ago, I went there on your recommendation. Same hotel (they’ve remodeled many of the units).

You’re welcome. I hope you had a great time. We certainly did.

It’s not a five-star accommodation by any measure — but if you’re looking for a pool and privacy, that’s the best place in the USVI.

Dont knock Idaho and Washington. They grow more than 50% of the potatoes, so very necessary for our kugels and chulents.

Floridas not the best place to go for vacation becuz its full of beaches and shmutz but there are worse places to go then that so as long as you stay away from the beaches and from wear women wear untznius cloths I guess its not too bad.

Try Colorado,we may not have the kosher restaurant scene but the mountains can’t be beat..

    #705740

Atlantic City is a nice getaway thats close to home, but its only appropriate for couples, not kids. There is a shul and chabad house and theres kosher food. I recommend going in the summer time when the weathers nice and there are many frum people who have summer homes up in ventnor.

Didnt we agree that mixed swimming is assur? Why do you keep encuraging it?

To be perfectly fair, you can’t say he is encouraging mixed swimming. The pool is private – meaning that it is enclosed by a fence, and with the entrance from the villa. The windows and doors that open to the pool have blinds that can be drawn so that men and women (who are staying together in the villa) can swim separately.

What “hotel” was that- or was it a hostel? I see hotels that are ‘on the cheap’ but nothing as low as you paid.

The name of the place is Pavilions and Pools on St. Thomas. You can easily find them via Google.

As I said, if you’re going expecting a five-star accommodation, you’re going to be severely disappointed. If, however, you want your own private pool, lots of privacy and a nice place to stay, then you’ll like it there.

Each place has it’s own kitchen. We brought our own meat (you won’t find kosher meat on St. Thomas) and a small George Forman grill. Basic stuff (fruits, veggies and other staples*) can be found in the local supermarkets.

    The Wolf

(* We didn’t bring drinks because we figured that drinks would be the easiest thing to find. When we got to the supermarket, we found the Coca Cola easily enough… but were a bit shocked to find that it did not have a hechsher. While I would have bet dollars to donuts that it was, in fact, kosher, I figured that it was better to just play it safe and we, instead, had iced tea.)

No… each room has its own outdoor pool. There is no central pool. There are also no blinds — just don’t invite people over to your room while you’re swimming.

    Wolf-

The “s” in “doors” was an unfortunate typo.

There were blinds in mine. I guess that was one of the redecorations that the owner of the villa I stayed in did (I found out that each villa is privately owned, and are not necessarily identical).

And they proved quite useful, as I needed them drawn when the sun came in in the morn.

BTW, the Chabad rabbi says on his website that he will kasher your kitchen for $50. I didn’t, but I think that would make a big difference to some people.

When I went, the rabbi was off-island. His wife was having a baby on the mainland — as if that’s an excuse to abandon your post. 😀

Just out of curiosity, do you remember which villa you had?
