My sister has a 12 hour stop over in zurich on her way back to Israel next week. Anyone have any good ideas on things to do in Zurich?
October 31, 2010 3:56 am at 3:56 am #705188WolfishMusingsParticipantI’ve never been to Zurich, so I can’t give any personal recommendations, but you might want to start here:

October 31, 2010 3:20 pm at 3:20 pm #705197phrumMemberBuy some tubes of Thomy mayonnaise! It’s the best in the world and makes a great Shabbos tam & treat with gefilte fish on your tisch!

Ask my brother how much he likes Swiss Banks…
October 31, 2010 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm #705199popa_bar_abbaParticipantI asked your brother. He said he’s not your brother.
October 31, 2010 9:24 pm at 9:24 pm #705200JamParticipantRegardless of what she chooses to do, if she uses public transportation(buses/trains) tell her to be prompt. They come and go on the exact schedualed second. Literally.
Also, phrum is right, Tommy mayo is definitely a worthwhile purchase! Its the best mayo ever! (and its 100% kosher even though it doesn’t have a hechsher on it)

I’m not surprised.

November 1, 2010 2:08 am at 2:08 am #705203HomeownerMemberAt Kloten Airport, there is a Swiss Rail (SBB) station under the terminal buildings. You can take the train directly to the Zurich Hauptbahnhof, the main station, sort of like Grand Central. Go second class as it’s a very brief ride.
From there,I would walk down the main street, the Bahnhofstrasse, to the Paradeplatz, and then to the lake.
Here is a listing of different tours (in English) from the city website:

If you are looking to buy any grocery products, there is a Co-Op supermarket near the train station and along the Bahnhofstrasse several department stores like Jelmoli and Globus have food departments.
Please note that in my experience you will very often see Swiss products that are exported to the United States with a hechscher (e.g. certain chocolates) sold without a hechscher. (In Europe, many products have no MARKED hechsher but are known in the Jewish community as being kosher.) Discuss with your rav whether or not you should buy them.
