Please read article below, written by my husband, about congressional candidates in the 9th CD, Anthony Weiner-Democrat and Bob Turner-Republican. Every vote counts, polls indicate that the election is close. Your vote on Nov. 2nd may make the difference in a close race.

    Brooklyn, NY: October 22, 2010:

Finally, with acrimony rising in recent days between the two candidates, an issue critical to the Jewish community has largely been ignored: Turner supports federal laws that will force states to equitably fund religious institutions, such as yeshivas and Catholic Schools. He states that laws prohibiting such funding is a form of religious discrimination and violates our constitution. This is huge as the average cost per NYC public school student in 2008-2009 was $16,578. Turner pledges to join forces with members of congress who have attempted to rectify this, but so far have failed. Weiner has stated he is opposed to public funding of religious institutions.

Interesting that a Republican is now criticizing a Democrat for not spending enough! But you can be sure that if Turner and the Republicans win, there won’t be any funding for any Jewish organizations, or anybody else.

And Turner is an ignoramous if he thinks that he can force states to fund religious institutions. The US Supreme Court slapped that idea down in the 2004 Locke vs. Davey case. William Rehnquist, no liberal, wrote the decision. For New York to provide public funds to religious schools will require an amendment to the New York State Constitution.
