No yeshiva that I ever went to allowed smoking. Can you please provide an example of a yeshiva that allows it?

Do you refer to Beis Medrash or high school? Most Beis Medrash boys are given a certain level of independence. Smoking is a personal life choice. A bad one, that is assur Mideoraysoh because of Vnishmartem Meod, but still ones personal choice. I think Yeshivos should make it clear that its Assur Gamur. More than that you can’t ask for.

October 18, 2010 6:13 pm at 6:13 pm #701699bptParticipantThe same way we turn a blind eye to loshon hora:
Lighting does’nt strike on the spot and “everyone’s doing it” so it goes unchecked and unchallenged.
But let that same bocher try to sneak a Hersheys,or wear a blue shirt, and he is DOOMED.
That’s where we are today. Sad, but true.
October 18, 2010 6:22 pm at 6:22 pm #701700arcParticipantintelectual, “quetion,exsplain”, irony.
most High schools dont allow it.
October 18, 2010 6:38 pm at 6:38 pm #701701bptParticipant“an example of a yeshiva that allows it”
They don’t “allow” it, but they don’t condemn it either, so in the end, they allow it

October 18, 2010 7:23 pm at 7:23 pm #701704bptParticipantFunny thing is, we as a society are all to willing to turn a blind eye to bocherim who “need to smoke to unwind” (though I for one cannot see what kind of stress they are under as compared to their peers), yet heaven help the female that lights up, all heck breaks loose.
Go figure.
October 18, 2010 7:38 pm at 7:38 pm #701705MoqMemberNu, we’re not perfect.
Maybe we need a Chafetz Chaim V’Nismartem Meod Ess Nafsosechem foundation. And while we’re at, starting eating healthier & stopping cooking with so much fat! And exercise a little! Half hour, three times a week min. ! Too many Alamonos from this stupid cancer stick (B”H smoking by women never real took in the frum community).
I IYH will not let my daughter go out with a smoker, even a social smoker, no matter how fine a Ben Torah he is. Cold turkey isn’t happening, but the more it’s looked down on, the less “yeshivish” it becomes, the less of our youth will start.
This is takeh an area we need to grow in. (R’ Schach said the hardest thing he ever did was quit smoking).
October 18, 2010 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm #701706intelectualMemberIf you dont stop what is happening in you house then you are indirectly allowing it to continue.
You can not argue this point.
real-brisker should be not allowed to post.

October 19, 2010 12:58 pm at 12:58 pm #701708MoqMemberListen, we can’t be knights of the round table; obviously resources and sanity are limited, and not everything can an issue all the time. So we do need to pick and choose, gather victories and then fight other battles.
This is a principle of chinuch in your own home as well. Our teenagers are not robots, and picking your battles is important if you want to any influence. And not all battles can you win.
Please turn on spell check. And get a new screen name. Makes it easier to understand you.
October 19, 2010 1:46 pm at 1:46 pm #701709World SaverParticipantNot the end of the world. Most bochurim do not end up permanent smokers, they usually stop sometime after they get married.
Also R’ Moshe writes (if i remember correctly), that although it is not a good thing, it is not assur.
October 19, 2010 2:18 pm at 2:18 pm #701710Be HappyParticipantAs a cancer sufferer I can only BEG anyone who smokes to stop NOW. Cancer hurts – It is a very lonely difficult nisoyoin. I asked a Rebbetzin about how to influence bochurim to stop smoking – She told me we cant bec. there are Magidei shuirim and even Roshei Yeshivas that smoke. I have news for you Torah will not protect you against cancer.

I don’t have a policy against my kids jumping into the Grand Canyon. Does that mean that I allow it to happen?

Just curious who you think you are that you think you should be the arbiter of who should be allowed to post and who not?

October 19, 2010 3:05 pm at 3:05 pm #701712blueberrymuffinParticipantI don’t approve of smoking and don’t know what is or isn’t allowed in yeshivos. But we do have to keep in mind that smoking is a contreversial issue that is based on our culture. In America smoking for a bochur is a big NO-NO yet driving is perfectly acceptable while in E”Y, a bochur is frowned upon if he drives yet most ppl wouldn’t give a hoot if he smokes.

October 19, 2010 3:15 pm at 3:15 pm #701714AinOhdMilvadoParticipantI once took a cigarette out of a bachur’s hand.
He said “Hey, wadda ya think you’re doing?!?”
I said “If some thug attacked you and was about to stick a knife in you, wouldn’t you want someone to grab his hand and stop him?”
“Yeah”.
“Well, – YOU are sticking the knife in yourself!”
He didn’t have an answer.

yes but smoking is taking away his life while driving is not.
(then again with Israeli drivers…you never know…)

Your story is rather ironic, considering your screen name 🙂
