Does anyone know if there are any issues with Kohanim going to Liberty Science Center?
July 22, 2010 4:04 am at 4:04 am #690857HelpfulMemberOther than the mummies?

July 22, 2010 2:29 pm at 2:29 pm #690858WolfishMusingsParticipantIIRC (and I’d check with a rav to be sure), the bodies of non-Jews do not transmit tumah via ohel. So, even if there are mummies, it is highly likely that they are non-Jewish mummies and therefore, not a problem.
Again, however, please CYLOR.

I meant Jewish mummies. Anyone who has been there can certainly testify they are all over the place.
Many even have strollers.
July 22, 2010 4:14 pm at 4:14 pm #690860WolfishMusingsParticipantHelpful,
Ah, I see. Thanks for removing the cloth from my eyes. 🙂
Nonetheless, the only reason that I can think of why the OP would be concerned is for the same reason that you joked about.

July 22, 2010 4:25 pm at 4:25 pm #690862Dr. PepperParticipantWe’ve been there a couple of times and have not seen any reason to keep out. If anyone does know anything please let me know.
Setting that aside the kids love the place and we highly recommend it.
(The only “bodies” exhibit I know of is near the South St. Seaport attached to The Gap. I was able to get out of going shopping there with my wife!)
July 22, 2010 4:30 pm at 4:30 pm #690863AinOhdMilvadoParticipantKohain or not, if you are being a good abba, tatte, saba, zeide, or in whatever capacity you are going there, bring an MP3 player with you with some good shiurim to listen to!
That place is b o r r r r r r r r i n g!!!
July 22, 2010 5:36 pm at 5:36 pm #690864rescue37ParticipantI disagree, I had a great time with and teaching my kids all about science last time I took them.
July 22, 2010 6:04 pm at 6:04 pm #690865Dr. PepperParticipantI’m with rescue37.
(By the way- if I’m spending quality time with my kids I’m never bored.)
July 22, 2010 6:11 pm at 6:11 pm #690866AinOhdMilvadoParticipantGlad some of you guys enjoyed it, but how long can you watch kids pour scoops of rice in and out of a pail without LOSING YOUR MIND?!?!? 🙂

Instead of just watching your kids do it, get involved yourself. Join them, take pictures/video, etc.

July 22, 2010 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm #690868Dave HirschParticipantAlthough I am not a Rabbi, I’d like to present you with the fact (in Halacha) about ‘Tumas Nochri B’Ohel’.
Although the Rambam and Tur originally state that corpses of non-Jews (via Ohel) as well as their graves do not transmit Tumah, they still write that a Kohen should refrain, and so does the Rema rule (YD:372). Some Achronim permit when it is in place of a Mitzvah. You may argue that taking your children (Chinuch?) to ‘Liberty Science Center’ is a Mitzvah…
July 22, 2010 9:14 pm at 9:14 pm #690869HelpfulMemberI’m not aware of the LSC having any body parts. Is that the case?
July 22, 2010 9:16 pm at 9:16 pm #690870WolfishMusingsParticipantFair enough, Dave. Thanks for the info.

Usually not, but I would probably advise checking the website for a list of exhibits before you go if this is truly an issue.

July 25, 2010 8:51 pm at 8:51 pm #690872d aMemberFrom what I remember from what my Rov told us (as we are Kohanim), if there are any body parts, they are enclosed in a case which becomes its own ohel and does not effect the museum itself.
Always ask your own Rov or Posek.
July 26, 2010 2:35 am at 2:35 am #690873Dave HirschParticipantd_a, I’m neither a Kohen nor a Rabbi to argue, however My humble opinion is (what I saw in Halacha) that not all cases will make it an Ohel for itself. It has to have a Chalal to render it a Ohel for itself. These Halachos are complicated as such your Rabbi should be consulted. I don’t know if there are any corpses in LSC, I also don’t know how they are cased.
July 27, 2010 10:25 pm at 10:25 pm #690874d aMemberAs I said… “From what I remember from what my Rov told us” and “Always ask your own Rov or Posek”
Don’t base ANY Halachic decision on YW or any other website or person for that matter. Always ask your own Rov or Posek
