IMHO a chavrusa is unquestionably better.

My shul does a learning program with different people speaking every 45 minutes, with a few minutes in between for drinks and snacks.

Although I couldn’t go, I heard everything was fascinating.

One speaker spoke about the origins of Lag B’Omer. Not as pashut as one might think!

Obviously, it varies from person to person. Some people find it easier to learn alone. For some, a chavrusa will definitely be better — for others it would not.

While I like a shiur as much as the next guy, on Shavuous night, I definitely cannot attend one. At that hour of the evening, I need to be actively learning, not passively listening. If I’m listening to a shiur at 1 in the morning, I’ll be asleep at 1:10.

I understand that Wolf. I heard the speakers were really great though. And really engaging.

A boring chavrusa can put you to sleep also.

Also, the speakers gave out source sheets so you were following along actively.

As it turns out, I had a good Shavuous night. My two teens decided that they didn’t want to learn what they were doing in yeshiva. So, figuring that they might want something a bit easier and something that can serve as a springboard for discussions, I opened up the gemara Sanhedrin and did a few dafim of Chelek with my sons.

I was with soemone whio teaches for a living and he was telling stories to some of his students and those stories were interesting enough to just about make the night go by (with some niodding off here and there on my part, but I started off already very tired because I had to work that day and had no time to ‘nap’, before Yom Tov started.)

Definitely with a chavrusah! Luckily my chavrusa showed up when he did, another half hour & my head would be sinking into the gemara literally. I didn’t take a nap earlier.

    Reasons for chavrusa vs. solo

1)helps you stay up the whole night.

    2) IMO I think especially Shavuos when klal yisroel was b’achdus

& we were m’ischayev in Arvus,(kol yisroel Areivim zeh Lozeh)*

it’s very befitting to learn with a chavrusoh.

    Also learning w/ a child (being m’kayem V’shinantom L’bonecha & son being M’kayem kibbud Av Too)

    * yeah Shwekey sings about it too 😉

I don’t stay up learning but I think that its better with a chavrusa bec. it keeps you up and they can help clarify something if its not clear.

Ultimately, it varies from person to person. For some people, a chavrusa would undoubtedly be better. For me, personally, I find that learning alone is most productive.

Recitation of “Tikum Leil Shovu’os” which after all is the official name of the nite program.

Bein_Hasdorim: Ironically, the concept of Areivim Kol Yisrael didn’t apply at Mattan Torah. It didn’t start (at least according to Rashi and many later Poskim) until we entered Eretz Yisrael.

If you do tikkun, then you’ll have no trouble from being distracted.

I personally prefer to learn on my own on Shavuot night. I can learn what I want at my own pace, and I can take a break when I want to walk around a bit. I generally go to one or two of the shiurim, depending on the topics.

Something else we do here is lein Megillat Rut before davening, not during.

Late at night it is usually more advisable to learn with someone else. This year we have the advantage of having shabbos on erev shevuos so we can all get the decent shluff that we don’t usually get on erev shevuos, plus we have friday night to practice staying awake during learning!!!!!

In England we have only a short night anyway with nacht being so late and alois so early. By the time we daven and have the seuda it leaves only 2-3 hours to learn. Australia have close to 12 hours. I don’t know how long you have on the states. Maybe you can post in which state you live in and how long you have to learn
