I live out of town and have a relative who goes to Boro Park a lot. I know it is a very heimishe neighborhood, yet I am perturbed at recent reports of crime that occur there. Would anyone be able to fill me in on this, as it’s weighing down on my mind? How safe would it be for a bochur (20 years old) to walk around on a Friday night (between 10PM and 1:30PM or 2PM) in the area between 60th Street (along 15th through 17th Avenues) and 47th Street (13th, 14th, and 15th Avenues)? What about to the area of the Rachmastrivka Beis Midrash? Is this whole area safe, or are certain streets or avenues to be avoided? If so, which streets are generally safer?

60th is already more out of the neighborhood.
Boro park on shabbos is full of yidden and is beautiful to stroll through at any hour.
Near rachmistrivke is definitely a great neighborhood as it is VERY JEWISH and in the heart of boro park.
In any case, we’re in galus and not safe anywhere. Only hashem can watch us whether its in BP or in the Bronx.
Good shabbos and keep safe!!
April 11, 2010 4:35 pm at 4:35 pm #682923oomisParticipantI heard there was an attempted kidnaping of an 8 year old Jewish boy in Brooklyn. People, PLEASE watch the children. In my neighborhood, we have parents whose little kids run around with absolutely ZERO supervision (I include kids under the age of 2). The parents rely on the slightly older ones to watch the babies. I have myself run out of my house to snatch up a baby who walked into the street, and another time caught another one as he was about to fall down a steep staircase on his tricycle. Both children had no parent in sight, and the parents made themselves nisht vissendig when I brought the kids back to them and told them what had happened. We cannot be so cavalier about our children’s safety. Hashem might be our Shomer, but He expects us to NOT rely on miracles.

I know its a mitzvah to be dan lzchus but this time I just cannot understand the mothers. I cannot find a zchus.
I have a family of my own B”H so I know what its like to have kids, and I would never let them be outside themselves. I really can’t understand what those mothers are thinking.
Very frightening.
I gotta go now…I’m taking my kids out to play!!!
April 12, 2010 10:02 pm at 10:02 pm #682925bptParticipantA 20 year old bocher should be fine anywhere in the 12 ave – 18 ave – 40 st – 60st box any time up till 11:00pm in the middle of the week, as late as 1:00 on a summer Friday night.
There is no “safe” time for an 8 year old to be out alone. Period.
EDITED
