I wish to bring to the community’s attention a potentially misleading new product. I bought YANOVSKY MATZOS, which come in a round tin, thinking they were hand shmurah matzos. Costing somewhat less per pound than the other brands, I thought I had come across a bargain.

Tonight a fellow shopper at a local supermarket pointed out that nowhere on the tin does it state that these are hand matzos. Indeed, a flyer that hung from the display case states, “Looks like hand made.”

This is very misleading, to say the least, not to mention a very expensive alternative to square machine shmurah! Please be aware that Yanovsky Matzoh is machine shmurah, not hand shmurah!

All the best for a chag kasher v’same’ach.

    How is this misleading?

I’d like to buy some handmade shmura square matzos; seen any?

An interesting historical note is that one of the strong objections to machine matzos (by those who assured) was for round machine matzos. They corners are trimmed off and the trimmings are added back to be rolled gain into matzos. There was a problem because the “shehiyos” are miztaref. There was a lesser problem with square machine matzos.

Presumably, the inverse problem would be with square hand matzos, they would have to be squared off, do you think they would discard such a large amount of dough? It would be rolled back into the dough and there would be a problem of “sheyioh”
