Any remedies for a hangover in preparation for Purim morning and Shushan Purim?
February 15, 2010 10:13 pm at 10:13 pm #674213jewish and working 22MemberA Bloody Mary (tomato juice, Tabasco sauce, ground black pepper, and a shot of vodka).
It is scientifically proven that the best remedy for a hangover is to drink a little alcohol the next morning. It thins the blood we will relieve the headache and nausea. After drinking, drink water to rehydrate yourself (a by product of drinking is that you dehydrate yourself). You should try to drink water while you drink the night before, so that you won’t be dehydrated the next morning.
February 15, 2010 10:44 pm at 10:44 pm #674214YW Moderator-80MemberI’m not so sure additional alcohol has been proven as a remedy. The nausea comes from gastritis secondary to the irritating influence of the alcohol on the stomach lining. I doubt if additional irritation will relieve the problem.
The tabasco sauce and pepper don’t seem like they will do much good for the gastritis either.
Hydration sure helps though.

Don’t believe the folklore remedy that drinking more alcohol will cure your hangover.
More alcoholic drinks will only boost the existing toxicity of the alcohol already in one’s body…
With a hangover, you’re most likely suffering from dehydration and a deficiency of important minerals like magnesium and potassium. Symptoms of dehydration include headache, cottonmouth, lightheadedness, and thirst. Drinking water and sports drinks will help you replenish your fluids, according to the NIAAA.
You may also feel queasy. Alcohol is also an irritant and can cause inflammation of the stomach lining and gastrointestinal discomfort.
These symptoms become worse if someone has consumed beverages with more alcohol content like shots of whiskey, as opposed to more dilute drinks such as beer.
February 15, 2010 10:58 pm at 10:58 pm #674216oomisParticipantTake a couple of ADVIL before going to bed on Megillah night, and make asure to be well-hydrated with Powerade. The best cure is prevention, however/ Don’t drink so much that you will get a hangover.
February 15, 2010 11:03 pm at 11:03 pm #674217YW Moderator-80MemberI also would definitely say NO ADVIL which is a well known stomach irritant and known to even cause gastrointestinal bleeding in some people. Tylenol is definitely preferred.
February 15, 2010 11:14 pm at 11:14 pm #674218oomisParticipantWhatever the doctor on TV said, ibuprofen is well known to have irritative tendencies on the gastric lining. Useless advice is fine to be posted here but not dangerous advice…80
February 15, 2010 11:29 pm at 11:29 pm #674219YW Moderator-80Memberfrom the Mayo Clinic website:
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) and naproxen (Aleve), can cause both acute gastritis and chronic gastritis…
Alcohol can irritate and erode your stomach lining, which makes your stomach more vulnerable to digestive juices. Excessive alcohol use is more likely to cause acute gastritis.

February 16, 2010 12:00 am at 12:00 am #674222YW Moderator-80MemberPickle juice can be pretty acidic, especially if vinegar based. Doesn’t sound too good to me.
February 16, 2010 12:07 am at 12:07 am #674223YW Moderator-80Memberpeppermint tea

February 16, 2010 12:13 am at 12:13 am #674224nathan21Memberhangovers come with the territory of getting drunk. i dont need a video. ive experienced them before and their terrible and i tell myself i wont drink again but purim is purim and theres no way im not drinkin purim
February 16, 2010 12:23 am at 12:23 am #674225yankdownunderMemberDrink in moderation, if you need to drink on Purim (don’t drink too much) set a limit this way you will not get to the hangover stage.
February 16, 2010 1:31 am at 1:31 am #674226yankdownunderMemberThere is no mitzvah to get a hangover on Purim.
February 16, 2010 1:39 am at 1:39 am #674227nathan21Memberyank. no one said there was and its not an aveira. but there is a mitzva to get drunk by the seuda. there is no mitzva to play basketball or bake cookies either. plenty of things we do arent mitzvas but arent aveiras. this is a digression of the topic at hand though. discussing drinking too much should be done on the drinking threads. this thread is here to help the people who do get hangovers from drinking too much on purim whether u agree with it or not
February 16, 2010 2:15 am at 2:15 am #674228aries2756ParticipantThere is no mitzva to get drunk. So if you stay within the framework of the mitzva to drink wine at the seudah you won’t have to worry about a hangover. The remedy is simple DON’T GET DRUNK!
February 16, 2010 2:20 am at 2:20 am #674229nathan21Memberaries: “ad lo yada”.
February 16, 2010 2:37 am at 2:37 am #674230oomisParticipantad d’lo yada is a nebulous term. It might simply mean that one is more loopy than usual. As I said my Rov says it is sufficient to be buzzed or feeling sleepy. If you would have a person sit in front of a driving simulator after two drinks, they would probably fail the simulated test, as their reaction time would be skewed, along with their judgment. THAT is what ad d’lo yada implies. Too many people use that “mitzvah” as an excuse to get stoned. Would that they were as dedicated to the observance of the mitzvos of honesty and chessed.
February 16, 2010 3:11 am at 3:11 am #674231goody613Memberi heard from rav fishel shachter that when it says ad d’lo yada it is ad v’lo ad b’chlal.
February 16, 2010 6:14 am at 6:14 am #674234anuranParticipantStart with what you drink and how you drink.
Clear spirits are better. Gin, vodka and rum don’t pick up congeners, terpenes and other nasties from the wood like brandy or whisky.
Your body can only process so much alcohol per hour. The amount depends on your mass, your gender, your age and how lean you are; muscle is better than fat.
Eat while you drink. Fats, fish, meat or milk are good. Stay away from salt which will make you drink more. So is bread. The B-vitamins in bread help replace what the alcohol is destroying.
In the morning, water, aspirin, more B-vitamins and sugars.
February 17, 2010 4:05 am at 4:05 am #674235HealthParticipantTo prevent a hangover headache: Take a pill of Advil or two aspirin before you go to sleep -Don’t take any Tylenol!
February 17, 2010 4:19 am at 4:19 am #674236oomisParticipantIt would seem that more people than only myself recommended Advil (gastric upset notwithstanding).Tylenol is like chiclets to a hangover.
February 17, 2010 8:34 am at 8:34 am #674237yankdownunderMemberThe best thing to do for a hangover is to hydrate. Water replaces moisture lost. Feverfew is good for headaches. Lime Aid with lots of Limes with sugar or honey is also good for a hangover.
February 17, 2010 9:58 am at 9:58 am #674238bombmaniacParticipantsleep and drink…and think about how bad you feel so you wont get drunk in the future!!!
