January 29, 2010 5:50 pm at 5:50 pm #673873squeakParticipantFrom what I’ve heard, the crunchy bugs are good and the small ones are the best.
January 29, 2010 6:37 pm at 6:37 pm #673874rescue37ParticipantI have heard the Rabbi Belsky from the OU said there is no problem, you will probably want to confirm by calling the OU.

January 30, 2010 11:18 pm at 11:18 pm #673876Be HappyParticipantLet’s get to the root of what is going on.The Mechaber in Shulchan Oruch Yoreh Deah 84/16 States that “all” worms found in fish; in the stomach are ossur, and in the flesh or between the skin and the flesh are mutar. It is accepted since the gemoras time(that means from Kabolas Hatorah)That the worms in the fish flesh is kosher.
Look in Rav Moshe Vai’s sefer and you will see the impressive list of Poskim that ruled that the worms are kosher.

many people wont eat blackberries and raspberries
strawberries have to be carefully checked and with a certain procedure
today, in Shul, someone found a worm in their dried fig

January 31, 2010 6:03 am at 6:03 am #673883smartcookieMemberMOD 80: our kehillah was instructed not to eat figs altogether since they are infested and CANNOT be cleaned properly.
Pity, they really are delicious but the tu bishvat we celebrated without them!!
January 31, 2010 11:13 am at 11:13 am #673884Be HappyParticipantRabbi Falk (From Gateshead) The Posek Hador in worms told us in a shuir that worms are not here to deter us from foods but it is our responsibility to learn how to check each fruit /veg correctly.
I know that Rabbonim around the world have forbidden rasberries as they have been found to be heavily infested and it is almost impossible to clean them as the infestation lives in the flesh.
There is also a huge difference in checking of fruit and veg depending on where you live. E.g strawberries here in England have not been found to be infested.
Incidentally when cooking fish put the fish into boiling water or into hot oil thus any worms will not come out of the flesh.
February 1, 2010 5:31 am at 5:31 am #673885bombmaniacParticipantheres the psak i got regarding worms, bugs and the like. if you wash the item, youre good.
if it’s frozen youre good. (obviously if its already been checked once)
if its cooked youre good. (obviously if its already been washed and whatever…)
the reason being that ordinarily you’d only really be chayav if you eat a k’zayis of non kosher stuff…however by bugs, since its a full creature even eating one miniscule bug makes you chayav. however, if its frozen, the eyes pop thus disqualifying it as a full creature. if its cooked, similarly certain of its body parts fall off, thus disqualifying it as a whole creature. so…enjoy your frozen and cooked creepy crawlies :D:D:D

I wonder where you got the information that the eyes pop out of frozen worms.
The breaking of a sheretz helps only in the event of “bitul” that is when the bug is lost and can not be found. a half bug is also “ossur. So frozen fruit and Vegetables still need checking for half bugs. Cooked bugs whether half or whole are forbidden.

I’ve never heard of these reasonings. Please verify before posting because some pple will take you very seriously and rely on this.
February 2, 2010 2:58 am at 2:58 am #673888oomisParticipantI am so eckled by all this talk of worms and eyes popping out, that I think I am only eating…wait a minute…. there is NOTHING safe to eat anymore!!!!!! Even the water has copepods! I guess the only safe thing is chocolate.
February 2, 2010 3:23 pm at 3:23 pm #673890Be HappyParticipantSorry Oomis 1105:
Chocolate has also been found to be infested – primarily nut variety.
Worms are not supposed to eckle you but you are suppose to learn e.g what fish dont have worms. e.g Here in England Salmon does not have worms in the flesh. They were found to have lice on the skin and so I buy my salmon skinless MINUS the head because the head is a parsha in itself. Coley is another fish here that does not have worms in the flesh and so it is a popular fish used for mincing.
Once you learn the correct way to check fruit and vegtables what is your problem??
February 2, 2010 6:45 pm at 6:45 pm #673891oomisParticipantOH NO!!!!!! NOT CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really???? And supposed or not supposed to be eckled, if I were to see a worm, I could never eat the stuff even if I knew all were removed, just knowing I saw it there. I once could not eat a freshly prepared tuna sandwhich, still completely wrapped, because a large ant walked by the wrapper (the ant never touched it).
February 2, 2010 9:47 pm at 9:47 pm #673893JoseMemberMr. Anuran,
Your post indicates your lack of knowledge about the halacha and facts. You are assuming that our ancestors did not check for bugs. You have no reasonable basis to assume that, it is just your wishful conjecture. Most certainly they did check for bugs and thoroughly at that.
The gemara talks about certain bugs that grow from themselves. Poskim universally understand that to mean that the bugs were implanted before they are visible. And visible means just that. Many bugs, ceratinly those that are on strawberries and coppepods in water are visible to the naked eye even without magnification. You may need magnification to identify what type of bug it is. But that there is something there is clearly visible. Bugs in fish or fruit that were laid before they were visible and grew inside are not ossur. The question with the fish is because certain bugs or worms did not grow in the fish rather they were or quite possibly can have been ingested after they were visible and there is no way to tell.
To detirmine what is consistent, you would first have to understand the halacha, which you clearly don’t. And you have no basis to assume that my ancestors, and possibly yours as well, did not check fruits, vegetables and fish for bugs.

February 3, 2010 1:39 am at 1:39 am #673894anuranParticipantMy point about fish is that all fish are subject to parasites. The contention that certain sorts of salmon were not is false to fact. I made no statements about the halachic status of these fish, but used it as a plea to cook them thoroughly before eating.
