December 21, 2009 4:02 pm at 4:02 pm #6702551st timerParticipantDoes Anyone have a remedy for really bad dandruff? My 16 year old has really bad almost looks like baby’s cradle cap.
December 21, 2009 4:30 pm at 4:30 pm #670256bombmaniacParticipanthave you tried the industrial strength dandruff shampoos?? ie…prescription shampoos
EDITED
December 21, 2009 4:37 pm at 4:37 pm #6702571st timerParticipantTried most of them. Works a little bit for a while, then comes back with a vengence. I’m a little afraid of the very strong stuff. My brother claims he is balding from all the dandruff shampoo he used as a teenager.
December 21, 2009 4:37 pm at 4:37 pm #670258oomisParticipantI pushed off a bad cold in situ, three times so far, by taking extra zinc and vitamin c. C alone did not do it.
As to the bad dandruff – iff it is so bad that it looks like cradle cap, there is more than mere dandruff going on and I would check with a dermatologist.
December 21, 2009 4:43 pm at 4:43 pm #6702591st timerParticipantI did, he just gave him some oily sample stuff to put on and then to follow up with alternating dandruff shampoos
December 21, 2009 4:57 pm at 4:57 pm #670260smartcookieMemberIst timer- I heard about apple cider vinegar for dandruffs. Never tried but its worth to give it a try since you can buy it in your regular grocery.
OOMIS- I find that when I feel a cold coming up, even for the slightest sniffle, I take ESTHER C- helps wonders for my whole family bh!!
December 21, 2009 5:01 pm at 5:01 pm #670261dovershMemberNot sure if I am allowed to post the actual name, but there is a pharmacy in Boro Park, 18th ave area, recommended by several local dermatologists and pediatricians for doing their own compounding. They make a product that will help with the worst cases of dandruff and scalp issues. Try it! Ingredients are natural and will not cause any harm.
December 21, 2009 5:06 pm at 5:06 pm #6702621st timerParticipantdoversh- 18th Avenue is a big stretch. Any street??? Thank you
December 21, 2009 5:29 pm at 5:29 pm #670263oomisParticipantI have ester C, I take it with the zinc. It definitely helped.
Doversh, I have no doubt this pharmacy is making great stuff for dandruff and other things. I just wanted to comment about the notion that people have that “natural” means safe to use. Raw milk from the cow is also natural, and people died from drinking it before it was pasteurized. Marijuana is also natural, as is opium, etc. etc. You get the idea. Just because something is natural does not = harmless. Just a caveat to all. We always need to check out product safety before use.

For any and all problems – the better part of a bottle of scotch or vodka, or even arak, consumed very quickly and on an empty stomach. Helps make me forget whatever problem I even thought I had before…………….
December 21, 2009 6:08 pm at 6:08 pm #670265dovershMember1st timer, McDonald Ave.
oomis, definitely agree. Feel free to ask what compound’s ingredients are.
A6KB, GREAT suggestion!
December 21, 2009 6:28 pm at 6:28 pm #670266bombmaniacParticipantof course you would probably need to have your stomach pumped…which WOULD make you forget any prior problem…seeing as those would pale in comparison with the current one :D:D:D
December 21, 2009 10:33 pm at 10:33 pm #670267oomisParticipantA600KB, throw in a pina colada and I am SO there!
December 21, 2009 10:46 pm at 10:46 pm #670268bptParticipant1st timer – Since you’ll be on 18th ave, stop in at the Right Place (corner 56th st)
They have a sign that has segulah for all ills:
1)Stand on one foot
2)Take a deep breath
3)and say Cockadoodle-Doo! as loud as you can, 3 times in a row
(the sign is in Ivrit, but it works in english too)
December 21, 2009 11:02 pm at 11:02 pm #670269dovershMemberThe sign works much better in Ivrit (Koo Kookoo Kookoori Kookooriku…) Worth a trip from anywhere!!
December 22, 2009 12:28 am at 12:28 am #670270yankdownunderMember1st timer- Try a Rosemary or Tea Tree Shampoo shampoo. Both Shampoos are good for dandruf. Fish is a good source for Omega Oil, good for the scalp and healthy for your sixteen year old.
December 22, 2009 12:56 am at 12:56 am #670271Be HappyParticipanttake a clove of garlic for stomache upset or cold. best swallowed whole.
December 22, 2009 1:30 am at 1:30 am #670272mazcaMembera clove piece in the tooth when you have pain works as an anesthetic
December 22, 2009 1:31 am at 1:31 am #670273mazcaMembera piece of garlic for the red eye
December 22, 2009 1:32 am at 1:32 am #670274mazcaMemberchamomile tea for inflmation in the eyes or other places
December 22, 2009 1:33 am at 1:33 am #670275charliehallParticipantI would not put something inside my body that an individual pharmacist compounded. There is essentially no regulation of their labs for safety, purity, etc.
That said, there actually are a lot of complementary and alternative therapies that do work. Unfortunately there has not been adequate research in part because there is no incentive for the people who market these therapies to do the research and as a result one can not always tell the difference between snake oil and something that can help a condition.
December 22, 2009 3:18 am at 3:18 am #670276ronrsrMemberGinger root for stomach upset or nausea.
December 22, 2009 4:34 am at 4:34 am #670277oomisParticipantI didn’t know that a piece of clove would work. I do know that OIL of cloves calms a toothache.
December 22, 2009 5:11 am at 5:11 am #670278smartcookieMemberSqueeze out a fresh garlic and let drip into ear to cure ear infection.
December 22, 2009 7:34 am at 7:34 am #670279HealthParticipantTo 1st timer,
Probably M. furfur. Look at it with KOH. Then you can use either Selsun blue shampoo or a tar shampoo. You can also use Ketoconazole shampoo which will kill the M. furfur.
December 22, 2009 8:33 am at 8:33 am #670280The Best BubbyParticipantIf you have a cold or feel fluish, or the start of an ear infection you can use the Propolis Extract PFL 30. It is fantastic. It is homeopathic and very safe, and kosher. I get it from a homeopathic friend in London. It is made by COMVITA in New Zealand. http://www.comvita.com You pour some juice (not pineapple juice as it has enzymes that make the drops seperate), and you use 8 drops 3 times a day (into the juice), and within a few hours or overnight you will feel much better. I had an terrible ear infection and was given antibiotics from my GP and took these drops for about 4-5 days and it helped me and I never took the antibiotics. Antibiotics are B’H great but not to take continuosly as then you lose all immunity. Propolis Extract is a wonderful homeopathic remedy!
When you have a cough and heaviness in the chest, the Proplolis is phenominal and gets rid of everything. Also echinasea drops or tablet form are fantastic to take when feeling a cold, flu like symptoms, cough are coming on. Take with a high dose at least 1000mg of Vitamin C that is TIMED RELEASE, (otherwise it is wasted in the urine). Zinc 15mg, can also be added.
I was once in Eretz Yisrael and got a bad chest infection during the summer, and a good friend grated fresh garlic and fresh root ginger and I drank this concoction with manuka honey (the higher the precentage the better quality) and that helped me to get rid of the infection.
Hope this helps. Refuah Shelamah to all who needs it!
December 22, 2009 8:36 am at 8:36 am #670281yankdownunderMemberUse Tea Tree Oil for Athletes Foot Fungus, or Pau Darco from Brazil also for Athletes Foot Fungus.
Neti Pot- Nasal Wash will irrigate the Nostrils (using salt and water solution tepid temperature) clearing the Mucus from the Nostrils. This is a simple and nice thing to do on the onset of the flu. Inhale Olbas Oil (all natural ingrediants) I think better than Vicks- the vapors will help promote natural breathing for faster healing.

For indigestion and gas (of the morning after a simcha variety); activated charcoal flushed down with real mineral water. For this I drink a 500ml bottle of Borjomi water from Georgia (Gruziya) which is available in Brighton Beach, and along Kings Highway in Brooklyn as well as from Raskin’s Fruits in Crown Heights. Here we buy activated charcoal in any pharmacy but I think you can get it in health food stores in the US.
December 22, 2009 12:00 pm at 12:00 pm #670283yankdownunderMemberPapaya or Paw Paw (here) is very good for digestion, as is Fennel, and Anise Seed. Kosher Sweedish Bitters are good, because it stimulates Hydrochloric Acid in the stomach needed in digestion.
December 22, 2009 12:44 pm at 12:44 pm #670284yankdownunderMemberIn the morning for breakfast (as a change from a morning cup) drink a cup of lemon water and wait about a half an hour before eating the first meal of the day. Lemon Water has a natural cleansing effect on the contents of food being digested.
December 22, 2009 12:51 pm at 12:51 pm #670285yankdownunderMemberI remember my Zeidy had a Gallon Jar in the Fridge of Stone (Apricots, Peaches, Plums, Nectarines) Fruit in Water. Every morning He would drink a cup of this Liquid Compote before eating breakfast. This was a very healthy thing to do first thing in the Morning.
