Was just wondering if anyone knows of any support groups in the NY area for people with mental illness, specifically depression?
Thanks in advance!

You might also want to contact the Yitti Leibel Helpline 1-718-HELP-NOW (435-7669) as they have quite a bit of information for referrals. Hatzlocho.
November 15, 2009 7:37 pm at 7:37 pm #668249happiestMembera600KiloBear, thank you for that lead as well. I wasn’t aware that this helpline made referrals too. Honestly, I don’t even know if I want to join one but I figured if I find out info then I might be more likely to do it…
Thanks again e/o for the info!

November 16, 2009 9:41 pm at 9:41 pm #668252I. M. HereMemberhappiest- are you looking for online support as well? There is a website Frumsupport.com that has a catergory for mental illness/ depression. Hatzlocha Rabba!! Keep up trying to be the best you can be. You can do it 🙂
November 17, 2009 3:04 pm at 3:04 pm #668253NY MomMemberI checked out the frumsupport.com site and it has many threads about depression. It actually offers support groups for ALL types of medical conditions/diseases.
Also, there is a frum mental health referral organization called Relief. Their website is http://www.reliefhelp.org, and they help connect frum people to the right therapist/doctor who can help in whatever area necessary. Another poster wrote that Relief may even be able to help out with the cost of therapy if that is an issue. (I myself don’t know this for sure, but you may want to check it out if applicable.)
Hatzlochoh Rabbah, Happiest! And may it be Hashem’s will that, from now on, you continue to make positive strides and be truly happy in all aspects of your life.
November 19, 2009 2:27 am at 2:27 am #668254happiestMemberIt’s ok Pookie, I was not insulted. I realized that someone probably would inquire about my screenname because it was a little hypocritical.
Thank you IMhere and NYMOM- I have checked it out and have found it to be very helpful!
I am going to have to call Relief, I do actually need some financial assistance in paying for my therapy but didn’t know where to turn to request it.
Thank you for all your help!!!
November 19, 2009 4:30 am at 4:30 am #668255BAS YISROELParticipantThere is a non-denominational (all religions) support group called Recovery. It is all over the world. There is a frum group at the Y in Boro Park and I think one frum group in Flatbush. They follow a 10 step program and it is very powerful and positive and has helped many people. There is no charge for attending the meetings. They pass a plate around and anyone can contribute or not contribute whatever they are able to.
This group will not take the place of a therapist for those who need therapy but has helped many individuals who are also in therapy and many who are not.
It is an annonymous group and people only say their first names. You would be very suprised at the people who attend meetings, professionals, etc. Recovery helps many people.
Many times meetings are held in a room in a church or sometimes in a shul. It is not held in the sanctuary and one may ask a shylah but I personally know people who were told that they could go by very choshove Rabbonim.
To find a Recovery meeting in your area google Recover, Inc. and you can get a list of meetings.
Hatzlacha
