Can anyone direct me to a source which would tell me or does anyone know whether use of a roll on antiperspirant is mutar on Shabbos and YT? Is it prohibited as applying a creme or ointment is?
No one here seems to be able to give me a clear answer and I don’t want to bother my rov in London bc he has a large family KAH and many ppl asking him far more important shylas before RH. I prefer not to use a spray bc it is not pleasant to inhale but I am not allergic or asthmatic or anything BH so I can use one if necessary.
Thanks – tizku lemitzvos!

Thanks – I’m a transplanted American and remember the star-K and Rav Heinemann shlita very well. Goldman’s milk, Ko-sure etc, etc, etc :).
That scented issue bothers me though and I think I will refrain from using it and look for a stick that does not ruin my clothing. On Shabbos the amount I put on before Shabbos keeps me dry at least until I fall asleep anyway after Mincha; YT is what concerns me.
With my background I do not think I can or should rely on a psak from a Sfardi haham (I do not hold even by Rav Ovadia shlita as much as I may consider him one of the gedolei haTorah beyameinu) but thank you anyway – it is valid for his community but probably not for me.

And as for the stick, Star-K:
“One may not smear cream or ointment, or use bar soap, stick deodorant, or toothpaste on Shabbos. Similarly, one may not apply lipstick on Shabbos. This is true even if the lipstick is applied lightly.”
Thanks – I better let it go for RH altogether and ask my rov afterward. Lots of conflicting opinions and so many different formulas out there that I fully understand why it may be difficult to get to a definitive psak.

LOL it’s OK (no pun intended). Star-k just brings back memories because I remember when Star-K Goldman’s milk changed life for CY customers like myself back in 1989-90 when I first started keeping CY. And when I lived in Brooklyn, the tenant before me left some Ko-Sure hot cocoa mix in my apt, which I put to good use as it was sugar free IIRC. There was something else I associate with them, maybe a store brand product that saved me a lot of money and a trip or 2 to BP back years ago when I lived in Manhattan.

If you don’t like it right out of the bottle, you can get sealed gauze soaked in it, such as a medical practitioner uses to disinfect your skin before giving you an injection. Works great, and it is portable.
Warning: if you shave your armpits, this will sting very badly and cause you to jump up and down and utter profanites.

Thanks! Was going to ask about that – but here we have real, undenatured 96% ethyl sold as rubbing alcohol so I can go to the pharmacy tomorrow, buy my usual pint ahead of time for kiddush on Simchas Torah morning and get an extra bottle for my underarms.
September 18, 2009 4:40 am at 4:40 am #659596ronrsrMemberyes, that’s the idea. If you drink enough, you won’t have to apply it to your underarms.

September 18, 2009 6:55 pm at 6:55 pm #659600ronrsrMemberalmost any mild antiseptic or antibacterial will do the trick. As long as it doesn’t irritate your skin or make a mess.

September 18, 2009 9:20 pm at 9:20 pm #659603ronrsrMemberthis stuff works better!!! The commercial, scented deodorants are sold to you as better, but the only effective ingredient in them is a basic antiseptic or antibacterial, which sells for a fraction of the cost of commercial deodorants.
September 21, 2009 4:23 pm at 4:23 pm #659604feivelParticipantthe basic ingredient will remain effective on the skin for a number of hours, as opposed to alcohol which remains active for seconds (until it evaporates)
in addition the commercial products have scents which also last for hours.
in addition the commercial products are much easier to apply, require no preparation (once you buy them), and require nothing else such as a rag or washcloth for application
you can get generic ones which will actually be cheaper than alcohol, considering the number of applications per container
alcohol is flammable and a potential danger for children
the alcohol fumes can be irritating to the eyes during application
