Does anyone know anything about doing laser on the eyes to improve eyesight? Do you know anyone who did it and if it was succesful or not?
What is the procedure?
The following was posted by me three months ago on another YW thread and I still stand by it. I have never had a problem nor has anyone I know who has had it done. Like any medical procedure, you need to follow post-op rules or problems may occur. I do know people who have had emergencies with contact lenses; infection, scratched cornea.
“I was very nearsighted; having -700 vision. About ten years ago, after almost a lifetime of squinting and glasses, I went for lasik laser surgery and now have perfect 20-20 vision.
If you are a candidate, go for it. Everyone I know who had it done is very happy with the results and it sure beats contacts. The costs can be unbelievably low.
The actual surgery takes less than a minute and I have never heard of anyone (who followed post-op directives) regretting the decision.”

in contrast to cherrybims experience, i see LOTS and LOTS of lasik complications, some minor, some debilitating, most without a solution, and permanent!
its true most people are happy they had it done but a sizable percentage are very unhappy with it…and they can never go back. i would never do it. there are very few ophthalmologists that have had it done to themselves, some even who do it to others.

Feivel, I too would not advise it for those who want it for cosmetics only.
Yet, most surgeries are for enhancing the quality of life but and are not for life threatening medical reasons. Many times when these surgeries are not successful, the patient is a lot worse off than before surgery. Some examples: cosmetic surgeries; orthopedic surgeries (hip,knee,back,carpal tunnel,arthritic,etc); tonsils; adnoids; bunions; teeth; etc.
What about the eye accidents that occur when people are wearing glasses and lenses as was mentioned above?
The point is that people make choices for various reasons. They can choose to take medication for the rest of their lives and the risks that are associated with that; or that they can opt for surgery which is a different risk.
Just as there are sites that are con; there are also sites that are pro. In any case, anyone thinking about doing lasik, should research thoroughly and speak and to those people who have had it done.
