Is it worth it for young students to apply for CLEPs in order to receive credits or is it just a waste of time? Please give me any tips or ideas. Thanks!!!
April 6, 2009 5:55 pm at 5:55 pm #683336tzippiMemberDo you know where you plan to apply them? Some colleges will accept, others won’t.
April 6, 2009 6:05 pm at 6:05 pm #683337an open bookParticipantwhat is (are?) cleps?
April 6, 2009 6:19 pm at 6:19 pm #683338mepalMemberYou should definitely work on cleps as you go through high school. It will make the load a lot easier if you are planning on clepping in the future. I believe Raizel Rite and Sara Schenirer accept cleps.
April 6, 2009 6:22 pm at 6:22 pm #683339ChattyMemberAOB: CLEP – College Level Examination Program. They are tests that students may take to receive college credits for selected courses, usually in the general education core. Thereby, if you take a CLEP test in a subject ex: Math, and you pass you get the credits and you won’t have to sit through a Math Class in college.
April 6, 2009 6:26 pm at 6:26 pm #683340moish01MemberAOB, they sound like something you do/apply for to get college credits 😉 (wanna join the common sense club?)
… yoyo please enlighten us….
what is (are?) cleps?
April 6, 2009 7:17 pm at 7:17 pm #683341yoyoMemberi’m really not so sure myself, but its something like chatty said “They are tests that students may take to receive college credits for selected courses”- which means less work for h.s students when they arrive at college. the problem is not many colleges accept them. does anyone know if the new sem accepts them?
April 6, 2009 7:28 pm at 7:28 pm #683342an open bookParticipantthanks for explaining. i think i’ve heard of it before, just didn’t know that’s what it was called.
April 6, 2009 7:31 pm at 7:31 pm #683343mepalMembercall them.
April 6, 2009 7:31 pm at 7:31 pm #683344kapustaParticipantyoyo, call them or speak to the person in your school whos involved with seminaries.
I guess it’s back to…
*kapusta*
so much easier!
April 6, 2009 7:41 pm at 7:41 pm #683345kapustaParticipantAOB, in a year or two this stuff will make of most of the conversation in your life for a while.

April 6, 2009 7:56 pm at 7:56 pm #683346an open bookParticipantthanks kapusta. something to look forward to 😉
April 6, 2009 9:42 pm at 9:42 pm #683347bozoParticipantto take a clep you can go to the library or clep gemach in lakewood and take out a
clep book. you study it and register to take a test on the material at a college
testing site. most average colleges except them. raizel rite excepts them, thomas edison
ocean county college. better colleges except up to 12 clep credits. but if your going
to a state college theyll except most of them. other private colleges will only except 12 and in only certain subjects that they specify you can. its definitely worth taking them, theyre cheap and if your smart youll pass the test. a pass is a 50!
i have 15 credits just from 4 tests that i took over the past few summers. i worked and
studied a little bit at night. its a great thing to do and saves tons of time!
April 7, 2009 2:24 am at 2:24 am #683349aussieboyParticipantFor all those who are asking a clep is a test you take instead of taking an entire course. This way if you already know the material you can just take one test instead of needing to sit through a semester that could be used learning something new.
April 7, 2009 2:48 am at 2:48 am #683350yoyoMemberthanks so much : > – a very big help for me and one question left- can you apply any time or is it something like the beginning of the yr or end?
April 7, 2009 2:52 am at 2:52 am #683351ywngirlMemberall you have to do is call a testing center and schedule a test for when u are ready.
April 7, 2009 2:52 am at 2:52 am #683352moish01Memberaussie, why do you know that?
April 7, 2009 3:18 am at 3:18 am #683353an open bookParticipantaussie: you make it sound so good 😉 i’m glad i don’t have to deal with this yet though.
April 7, 2009 3:19 am at 3:19 am #683354aussieboyParticipantmoish: Im not sure exactly where I heard it, but I have 2 older siblings that went through college so I probably heard it from one of them.
April 7, 2009 3:55 am at 3:55 am #683355JewessMemberNot sure if you’d mind or not, yoyo, but when you CLEP I believe you only get a Pass on your transcript–no grade. It’s a good way to finish college quicker if your school accepts them.
April 7, 2009 4:56 am at 4:56 am #683356aussieboyParticipantJewess: In a way it is good if you dont do well at least it doesnt go on your GPA. Although if you do very well it doesnt go on either.
April 7, 2009 1:39 pm at 1:39 pm #683357mepalMemberJewess: similiar to aussie, I also have a sis clepping away so I know that you do get a grade. As soon as you finish the test, your mark pops up unless you’re taking an English one that requires an essay.
April 7, 2009 2:45 pm at 2:45 pm #683358bozoParticipantthe test is computerized so you get a mark right after. also you call a testing center
to register, you get a form to fill out and when you get there you pay. brookdale college
in verrry chilled out you dont have to register, just show up by the hours-for any lakewooders here.
April 7, 2009 6:04 pm at 6:04 pm #683359gavra_at_workParticipantYou are better off trying for AP’s (if you still can), which are more accepted.
April 7, 2009 7:56 pm at 7:56 pm #683360kapustaParticipantgavra, AP is a lot more work, and it’s done in the beginning of the year, no?
April 8, 2009 4:32 am at 4:32 am #683361yoyoMemberwhats AP and is it like clepping with the same advantages?
April 8, 2009 6:32 am at 6:32 am #683362aussieboyParticipantyoyo: AP stands for advanced placement. They are college level courses for high school students and by taking them they get credits so that when they go into college you dont need to take as many credits. The only downside with AP courses is that they are a lot harder and you need to pass a test in order to get the credits, as opposed to CLEP where you just take a test whenever you want and you dont need to do any work.
April 8, 2009 1:28 pm at 1:28 pm #683363anonymisssParticipantbtw, you can take them even if you’re not yet in college. CLEP keeps your scores on file for 20 years and you can transfer them to your college. The reason you might want to do it when you’re still in HS (AOB, this is for you,) is that you can take the clep when you’re learning the material in school and it’s so much easier than reteaching it to yourself in three years. I wish I would’ve done that, it would’ve made my life so much simpler.

April 8, 2009 7:39 pm at 7:39 pm #683364yoyoMemberdoesnt sound that bad actually.and if it gives me more credit than its much more worth it. thanks a ton for all your help.
April 8, 2009 10:27 pm at 10:27 pm #683365anon for thisParticipantI think APs are given in the spring, to correspond with the time students complete the coursework. You do not need to take the course in order to take the test; you can study the material on your own instead. When I took APs, they were graded on a scale of 1 to 5 and most colleges accepted a 4 or 5. For subjects such as history or English, it’s not too difficult to study the material on your own & get a 4 or 5, but I wouldn’t recommend it for a subject such as calculus.
April 12, 2009 1:35 am at 1:35 am #683366an open bookParticipantanonymisss: seriously??? i really should find out more about this, thanks for the idea! if it works that would be great!
April 14, 2009 9:07 pm at 9:07 pm #683367bozoParticipantanon for this you said you can take ap test without taking the course. so if your school
doesnt give ap classes you can take it? i researched this whole thing and you could take
the test but theyll place you in a public school closest to you and theyll talk to your
college advisor to place you. but no such thing a lakewood girls school-advisor for college! it seems
like the only way to do it is by going a public school to take it. any other ways you know about? thanks!
April 17, 2009 5:53 am at 5:53 am #683368anon for thisParticipantbozo, I took AP tests in a couple of subjects many years ago, outside of the NYC area, so I’m not sure exactly how it would work for you. At the time, my high school did not offer any AP classes, but the school guidance counselor (she mostly helped students choose & apply to seminaries) arranged for us to take the exams & administered them. Even if your school does not have a college advisor, your guidance counselor or another school official can probably act in that capacity; she would only need to receive the testing materials, supervise test-taking (or arrange for this) & send back the tests as required. If you cannot find an administrator at your school who is willing to do this, you may need to take the test at another school. Perhaps another Jewish girls’ school would be willing to help, if you’d prefer not to take the test at a public school (if shabbos test dates are an issue with respect to public schools, the testing company will arrange an alternate date for you).
April 17, 2009 6:01 am at 6:01 am #683369kapustaParticipantanonymisss, CLEP is not only on the material you learned in school, I remember hearing my principal saying very clearly that if you just take it based on what you learned for the course, its not worth it because there’s no way to pass. (I dont know that this is with everything, but most things)
April 17, 2009 2:10 pm at 2:10 pm #683370mepalMemberkapusta: In the worst case, there are certain books you can study from to help you pass but it is primarily a matter of luck. And some brains…
April 17, 2009 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm #683371bozoParticipantanon for this-thanks for ur help!
kapusta and mepal-you gotta read the clep book but it doesnt mean youll pass.
it is brains and if you do well on government type of tests. also an open minded person
who knows a lot in general, will do well.
February 17, 2010 5:46 pm at 5:46 pm #683372potpieMemberDoes anyone know if Queens College accepts CLEP credits? Thanks.
February 17, 2010 5:56 pm at 5:56 pm #683373word of the wiseMembercan u clep straight through for a BA. how much would it cost aprox at the end?
February 17, 2010 6:11 pm at 6:11 pm #683374potpieMemberCLEPs work for everything except for the core courses required for your major. It is possible to CLEP all the non-essential courses, but you have to find a college willing to accept so many credits from CLEP tests. I would reccomend Raizel Reit or Sara Schneirer, as these are the 2 colleges that I know about which grant a bachelor’s through mostly CLEP credit. In terms of your core courses, I know someone who is know majoring in OT through Raizel Reit, so she needs to take science courses, and they take approximate one year of Sundays to complete. Hope this was helpful.
February 17, 2010 6:15 pm at 6:15 pm #683375word of the wiseMemberanything for men?
February 17, 2010 6:30 pm at 6:30 pm #683376A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantFor men, CLEPs may be the only alternative, since lots of Mesivtas don’t offer AP’s because they want the bochurim to stay focused on learning, not college credits. That’s what a Rosh Mesivta advised me.
My son is now doing an advanced degree from TTI, he clepped his way through a big part of the undergrad process while learning FT. Does he know as much in his CLEP subjects as someone who took the course at a “regular” college? Possibly not, but he got a good mark got his degree, so ultimately, who cares?
February 17, 2010 6:45 pm at 6:45 pm #683377word of the wiseMemberwhere did he take it. how much did it cost?
April 15, 2010 3:07 am at 3:07 am #683378potpieMemberDoes Queens College accept CLEP credits?
April 15, 2010 5:26 am at 5:26 am #683379simcha manMemberWhen I was in high school, like most teenagers, I did not know what I wanted to do when I graduated. As a matter of fact, I had no intention of going to college at all – I had enough of studying and paperwork. However, my older and wiser parents very much encouraged me to take CLEP tests each year according to the subjects that I learned. I can not tell you how greatful I am that I did that. The college I went to did not accept all of my CLEP credits, but the ones that were accepted saved me a lot of money and time!
Is it worth it? I say 100%!
Is is a waste? I did have some CLEPs that were a “waste” but I have no regrets because I gained way more than I lost.
1) I didn’t have to study hard for the CLEPs while I was in high school. I had jsut learned the subject that year and did some practice CLEP questions in preparation for the CLEP test. If I would have CLEPed while in college I would have had to spend days (or weeks) teaching myself the material and studying.
2) CLEP tests are way cheaper than a college course. CLEP tests were $45-$75 (could be it’s about $100 now) and college course cost close to $1,000 each. I’ll let you do the math.
April 16, 2010 1:24 am at 1:24 am #683380charliehallParticipantAccording to its web site, YU accepts AP scores of 5 (really hard to get) but no CLEP credits at all.
April 20, 2010 10:30 pm at 10:30 pm #683381potpieMemberHow about Queens? Anyone?
