The following bracha is said only once a year, during the month of Nissan, on fruit trees in blossom.
It is not said on flowering trees that do not bear fruit.
It is not said on fruit trees that already have fruit.
Only on fruit trees when they are displaying the flower blossoms that precede their fruit.
It is preferable to say the bracha on at least two trees.
The bracha should be said with a sense of awe, appreciation, admiration, and joy of HaShem and the world He created for us. We specifically acknowledge Him in the presence of fruit trees which delight our senses with their floral displays, even before they provide us with their tasty fruit. We realize that this is an extra-special gift from G-d to us.
See Shulchan Aruch O.C. 226, Mishna Brura and other commentaries.

April 5, 2009 8:01 am at 8:01 am #941158JaxMemberchofetzchaim: wow that google thing to find trees in your area is amazing! thank so much!
April 5, 2009 8:29 am at 8:29 am #941159moish01Memberhey how cool – my grandparents’ house is on that list 😉
(now you can track me down… just visit every house and ask if they have a grandson Moish;))
You mean your grandparents don’t add the 01 at the end, don’t they have many grandchildren named moish?
April 5, 2009 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm #941160JaxMembermoish: i’m on my way to do just that! kidding!
April 6, 2009 3:30 pm at 3:30 pm #941161moish01Memberactually, no. I’m the only Moish on that side but one of my cousins is “moishy” and he’s only like four or five years old.
mind you, i just had to go through all the families in my head to remember that- we’re both named for people on the opposite sides.
April 6, 2009 10:15 pm at 10:15 pm #941163YW Moderator-42ModeratorI heard a story that 28 years ago, the last time Birchas Hachammah was recited, Rav Chaim Kanievsky went outside to say Birchas HaChama and saw a tree in blossom for the first time that season.
He had to decide which comes first, Birchas Ha’Ilanos or Birchas Ha’Chama. You might think that Birchas Ha’Illanos is more tadir because we say it each year, as opposed to Birchas Hachammah, which we only say once every 28 years. On the other hand, Birchas Ha’Chammah is confined to a very limited time-frame – the first three hours of the day – whereas Birchas Ha’Illanos may be said at any point during the month of Nissan.

April 6, 2009 10:21 pm at 10:21 pm #941165squeakParticipantwhy didn’t he just ask his father which to say first?
April 6, 2009 11:09 pm at 11:09 pm #941166feivelParticipantsqueak
zrizos b’Mitzvos
both were incumbent upon him right then. (unless his father was standing right next to him)
April 6, 2009 11:41 pm at 11:41 pm #941167squeakParticipantfeivel, 🙂 I’m assuming that since the mitzva is enhanced “b’roiv am”, where else in Bnei Brak would the Steipler have been?
April 7, 2009 12:12 am at 12:12 am #941168PMMemberThe story from R’ Chaim is unlikely, because oseh maaseh bereishis is “matzui” not “tadir”. It does not come at regular intervals.
April 7, 2009 8:16 am at 8:16 am #941170yankdownunderMemberI have been told that I am not obligated to do Bichas Ha`Illanos because I live in the Southern Hemishpere. How do other Posters feel about this?
April 7, 2009 1:23 pm at 1:23 pm #941171moish01Memberis that why your name is “downunder?”

April 14, 2009 4:30 am at 4:30 am #941173smh1Memberwhere did that list of fruit trees come from? I’m assuming that people signed up; but I don’t recall seeing any sort of notice in the newspapers or online. it’s very cool (and a sign of the times) that Misaskim did this google hook-up to easily find the trees!
I just hope that we get to say it this year. Today is 20 Nissan, and all we have up here in Canada are tiny buds. Can it really only be said in Nissan? what if no local trees have blossomed yet?
April 14, 2009 5:57 am at 5:57 am #941174chofetzchaimMembersmh1, it wasn’t Misaskim who did the Google Maps thing. Misaskim made the list, somebody from Viable Solutions took the Misaskim list and made a Google Maps thing out of it.
April 14, 2009 5:41 pm at 5:41 pm #941175smh1Memberchofetzchaim, thank you. who’s viable solutions? a frum company?
and does anyone know how the list was put together? I’m curious…
April 15, 2009 1:39 am at 1:39 am #941176chofetzchaimMemberYes, Viable Solutions is a frum company.
I assume the list was put together by people submitting their addresses to Misaskim.
