We as a community are very aware of ADD & ADHD in children. Our education system has come a very long way in educating staff & offering the appropriate assistance for ADD/ADHD students (sometimes even a bit overzealous with diagnosis & treatment, but that is a separate topic).
With the appropriate help & guidance available today, there is great success in children with ADD/ADHD growing into highly functioning flourishing adults.
We may however overlook the many adults with ADD/ADHD that grew up before we were aware of this condition. They may have gone through all types of hardships and labeling in there youth. With the proper help there lives may have turned out much different if they and there family would understand there condition.
Please share how this condition affected you as yeshiva men, in your learning as adults, your jobs and general life. What is your coping mechanism?
Are any of you aware of support or coaching appropriate for frum yeshiva people?
ADD/ADHD is not gender exclusive and is common in both male & female. Although the treatment and coping mechanism are the same for both genders, the way that a person is affected is different in males then in females and each gender will benefit from a discussion like this far more with there own gender.
Please keep this post male oriented.
March 2, 2009 7:33 pm at 7:33 pm #639260anonymrsParticipantim not sure if i qualify, cuz im not in my 30s or 40s, but i was diagnosed in college, about 6 years after i graduated high school. in general, i am typically very bad at taking written tests, but will pass an oral one with flying colors. i have taught myself many coping mechanisms, so i am now able to sit still and focus on the task at hand. because of the hardships i had in (elementary and high)school, i stopped trying around grade 6, and stopped going half way through grade 10.

March 3, 2009 3:59 am at 3:59 am #639292moish01Memberhey what happened to mine? so what if it was feeding off squeak’s?? it had the “H” in there!
March 3, 2009 5:23 am at 5:23 am #639293anonymisssParticipantsqueak-reminds me of this one:
How many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb?
One, but it has to really want to change.
~a~
March 3, 2009 3:09 pm at 3:09 pm #639296squeakParticipantActually, the correct answer is none – the change has to come from within the lightbulb itself.
March 3, 2009 3:21 pm at 3:21 pm #639297noitallmrParticipantHow many Lubavitchers does it take to change a light bulb?
None- it didn’t die!
