Salute To Israel Parade Marches Up Fifth Ave

Fifth Avenue is a sea of blue and white for the Salute to Israel Parade.

The parade celebrates the 62nd anniversary of Israel’s independence.

Several elected officials are marching in the parade, including Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and gubernatorial candidates Andrew Cuomo and Rick Lazio.

The Parade route begins at 57th Street and Fifth Avenue and continues north on Fifth Avenue to 74th Street. The Parade takes place from 11 AM to 4 PM, Rain or Shine.

Organizers expect nearly a million people to attend.

  1. I’m not sure why Yeshiva World would post any information about the parade when it certainly has no connection to the “yeshiva world”.

  2. Like it or not, ygmonsey, there are a lot of yeshivos that do go and some members of the ‘Yeshiva World’ attend as well. Either way, it shows support for Eretz Yisrael in America, so get lost.

  3. Excellent question ygmonsey. Maybe it was to tell us all to avoid Manhattan today . . . Sort of like a traffic report. I hope, however, that your point will be well taken.

  4. I guess the Yeshiva World believes that things that have to do with Eretz Yisro’el and international Jewry has what to do with the Yeshiva World, even if they aren’t an exact mirror to our hashkafa.

  5. Who exactly is yeshiva world intended for? I for one am a proud reader of Yeshiva World as well as a passionate supporter of Medinat Yisrael (and yes my son goes to a yeshivah that does not particpate in the parade.) And in case you think Israel is not relevant to your life consider these facts:
Israel is the world’s leading finacial supporter of Torah learning in the WORLD!!
Coutless young men give their lives every year, so you can visit the Kotel when you wish or visit Meron on Lag Ba’Omer or send your children to learn in yeshivah.
Where are you going to turn when the most anti-Semetic presiedent in our history, makes it impossible for us to live in this country any longer.
If we can’t support each other, despite our different viewpoints, how can we expect the rest of the world to respect us?

  6. Shuali –
What exactly is the point that is to be well taken? Is it that some Yeshiva World readers are narrow minded and intolerant of anyone who holds a viewpoint different form theirs?

  7. #6 Student –

I would guess that Shuali is referring to the fact that the parade does not seem to be relevant to most of the YeshivaWorld readership. No one is saying that the supporters do not have a right to their parade – let them go ahead and enjoy it, and hope that nothing bad comes from it (it many ways). And there are definitely some readers of the site that do support the parade, and Kol Hakavod to them. Each person should follow their own da’as Torah. However, YeshivaWorld aims for a certain hashkafa as a site, and this does not seem to be in line with that way of thinking. If Burger King opened a restaraunt in the city with a Triangle K Hashgacha, they’re entitled to call themselves Kosher (especially in Georgia). But YeshivaWorld readers, on the whole, would not find that story newsworthy (except for maybe as a human interest story), and one would assume that it would not be posted here. Same goes for the parade.

  8. #1 & #3:
Even if your torah values do not include having a Jewish state, there are many in the “yeshiva world” that do believe this is a good thing. And this is at least as relevent to the “yeshiva world” as the vast majority of the rest of the news posted here.
Why not complain there as well? Or is it just that here is a good place to air out your anti-zionist politics?

  9. #2 I’m sorry to see how angry you are, but I guess it all boils down to the definition of “yeshiva world”.
#4 & #5 You must differentiate between Eretz Yisroel & Medinat Yisroel. I would certainly hope that we are all supporters of Eretz Yisroel. Daas Torah which is the arm of the “yeshiva world” does not support Medinat Yisroel. I believe that this parade represents Medinat Yisroel. We won’t even discuss the total lack of Tznius at the parade.

  10. To ygmonsey, when you say Dass Torah does not support Medinat Yisroel, who are you talking about? And what are you talking about? Are you saying that Daas Torah does not recognize the legitimacy of the State of Israel as the legal government representing several million JEWS or are you saying that they don’t agree with some of the policies of the Israeli government? Hopefully you can see the difference between those. Maybe you don’t believe in the State as “reishis tzimichas ge’ulasanu” but it is THE Jewish state and perhaps, just perhaps, you should remember that.

  11. #12 I don’t think you get my point. I’m not pretending to be a Netura Karta nut. Of course in the secular world they are a legal government. However, as Frum Jews we have no business honoring them by participating in their parade. As far as Daas Torah, the two indisputable Gedolai Hador in 1948 were the Chazon Ish & the Brisker Rov who were both certainly against a secular Medina and very possibly against a Medina period (which was definitely the opinion of the Brisker Rov).

  12. ygmonsey, what do you mean “in the secular world they are a legal government.” Maybe that is part of the problem. I only live in the world, not the “frum” world or the “secular” world. In the world, they are the ONLY JEWISH National government. Perhaps the gedolim you quote were against the establishment of the state in 1948, in the same way that the frum rav in “The Chosen” was against it. But events and reality have a way of changing both opinions and their implications. Rav Moshe z’tl, was against organ transplants, when they were experimental and first being tried. Years later, when they bacame more routine, he CHANGED his opinion. Even Gedolim change their opinions. With the State of Israel 62 years old, isnt it time to accept the reality? Israel exists. Thanks to the secular governments over the years MORE TORAH IS LEARNED IN THE SECULAR STATE than even in Brooklyn, Lakewood or those wonderful places in pre World War 2 Europe. If nothing else, isnt that worth at least acknowledging?
