February 2, 2009 6:04 pm at 6:04 pm #673191KeepinEntertainedMembermy comp screen sort of turned upside down – meaning the start menu is now on the side of the screen rather than on bottom and all the icons are therefore the wrong way – basically the entire screen was turned vertical…any ideas how to get it back the righr way!? pls! help!

February 2, 2009 8:42 pm at 8:42 pm #673194KeepinEntertainedMemberhow do you drag and drop the entire thing?
February 2, 2009 9:26 pm at 9:26 pm #673195Mayan_DvashParticipantRight click a spot on the task bar e.g. next to the start button and make sure “Lock the Taskbar” is NOT checked. Now (left) click and drag the taskbar to where you want it.
February 2, 2009 9:36 pm at 9:36 pm #673196squeakParticipantIf the taskbar was locked, she would not have been able to drag it over to the side in the first place.

anyone here that can give some advice, answer some questions?
February 3, 2009 12:20 am at 12:20 am #673198JosephParticipantfeivel – make sure its unplugged while operating on it 😉
Really, the thought is more daunting than the practice.
February 3, 2009 1:59 am at 1:59 am #673200Mayan_DvashParticipantsqueak, we live in a society where tech support’s first response (rightfully so) is “Make sure the device is plugged in and the power switch is on……
February 4, 2009 5:41 pm at 5:41 pm #673201feivelParticipanthave you built one joseph?
February 5, 2009 1:57 am at 1:57 am #673202JosephParticipantFeivel – About 15 months ago. Someone got me all the parts and I said to myself (looking at all the pretty boxes) this should be a snap. I opened up the boxes, saw all the many wires — big and small, and said uh-oh. I started putting it together and it wasn’t so geferlach. 🙂
March 22, 2009 5:34 pm at 5:34 pm #673203CrashOverrideMember@Mayan_Dvash – that is so true. Its the first thing that I tell people when they call me to tell me that their system is not working… ;P
June 26, 2009 7:28 am at 7:28 am #673204d aMemberWhen browsing online, if certain pages don’t open correctly or you get “Input string was not in a correct format.”, you are probably using a diffrent web browser then Internet Explorer. Most websites are built for IE. Some don’t work on Fire Fox and other browsers. If this happens, switch temporarily (or permanently) back to IE. Hatzlacha!
June 26, 2009 1:51 pm at 1:51 pm #673205I. M. HereMemberThis tip is based on what KeepinEntertained asked 4 months ago regarding the screen rotating. If it don’t turn back by dragging and dropping then try right clicking on the screen and click on Graphic Options then Rotation and then click on normal. It should turn the screen back around.

Hitting alt and f4 while posting is a known segula and a very good way of preventing the yetzer horo from getting you to post dvorim beteilim.
June 26, 2009 4:34 pm at 4:34 pm #673207Dr. PepperParticipantHold F5 down (or put a book on it) and you’ll be the first one to see your post when the moderator approves it.
Use ALT + TAB to toggle between different windows.
Press WINDOWS LOGO + D quickly if your boss/ supervisor/ spouse is coming and you are in middle of typing a juicy post.
June 29, 2009 1:24 am at 1:24 am #673209mepalMemberPress WINDOWS LOGO + D quickly if your boss/ supervisor/ spouse is coming and you are in middle of typing a juicy post.
Dr. Pepper, VERY good to know. There is also an icon on the bottom of most screens that will do the same job!
June 29, 2009 1:54 am at 1:54 am #673210I. M. HereMembermepal- which icon?
June 29, 2009 2:33 am at 2:33 am #673211mepalMemberIf installed in your pc, it should be near the ‘start’ button. There are usually three icons there. One of them does the job.
June 29, 2009 6:35 pm at 6:35 pm #673212Dr. PepperParticipantThis is a personal preference but when typing I find it much faster to press WINDOWS LOGO + D at the same time than to remove my hand from the keyboard, grab the mouse, move the pointer to the icon and click.
It also looks very suspicious if you quickly grab the mouse when someone is coming as opposed to casually pressing two keys at the same time.
June 29, 2009 10:39 pm at 10:39 pm #673213d aMemberThe following was posted by areivimzehlazeh in the Attention Mods thread. I think it fits very well here as well.
To aob and other young CR members:
You’ve heard this before, but please take a minute for a refresher course.
Some general advice for when you correspond via internet and email: you can never be too careful with strangers
Regarding an email address you are not familiar with (that contacts you first):
– do not respond at all
– do not even respond “who is this” or the like
– do not use any links in the email message
– do not contact any other contacts provided by that unfamiliar address, EVEN IF IT/THEY SOUND SECURE OR FAMILIAR
– do not dial any phone #’s provided in the message
– if the message seems threatening in any way or if applicable to the situation, forward the email to an authority figure
Regarding anonymous contacts online:
– you should not be contacting each other directly (via phone, email etc.)- YOU NEVER KNOW WHO THE OTHER PARTY IS, no matter how comfortable you become with the person and especially no matter how much the person reassures you it’s ok. This is just an upgraded, spruced up tactic of the age old kidnapper offering candy…
Keep in mind that above rules are not over-reacting. They’re there to keep you safe and a reminder to only use the internet for good and safe purposes.
Sorry for the dreaded speech.

June 30, 2009 5:01 pm at 5:01 pm #673216jewishfeminist02MemberHere’s a tip: When buying computers and computer accessories, make sure to document every little thing relating to the purchase and keep it safely in a file. That way, if something happens to the computer and you need to call tech support, you’ll have all the documentation relating to the purchase date, warranty, and coverage. You don’t want to end up paying several hundred dollars for something that would have been covered by the warranty just because you can’t find the information that proves you’re entitled to the coverage.
Another tip: Buy computers from Apple or another American-based company. Before I bought my Mac, I had a Dell. Their tech support people are based in India, and if you call with a problem, you can never understand what they’re saying. It’s nice that the work enables poor people in India to earn a living, except the advice needs to be intelligible, and the company probably pays them peanuts anyway.
June 30, 2009 5:20 pm at 5:20 pm #673217feivelParticipantbobo
my project went very well
very smooth
(but it took a lot of asking questions at newegg and other forums)
UNTIL
was beset with severe problems installing windows
was extremely frustrating trying to find the problem
after about two weeks i discovered the RAM was not compatible with my motherboard
i DID research this beforehand and the RAM WAS theoretically supposed to be compatible, but it turns out it wasnt. different RAM solved the problem. seems this type of thing is common with building systems.
still would do it again though
ended up with fast powerful reliable pretty (i used different colored fans) system

January 13, 2010 3:49 am at 3:49 am #673223bombmaniacParticipantbasically dont open ANY email with attachments unless you know who it is coming from and verify with that person that he or she is indeed sending you an attachment. dont open spam. only open mail you are expecting.

January 13, 2010 3:13 pm at 3:13 pm #673228bombmaniacParticipantum…mod…it truly amazes me how you could possibly think that emails and possible virus bearing attachments dont pertain to computers…
I don’t think that. This thread is not for all things related to computers. Please see my above post. Please see the original post which I linked to.
And, in fact, I DID leave your comment as it WAS a computer tip. I deleted the comments related to a specific email hoax
January 19, 2010 12:06 am at 12:06 am #673229YW Moderator-80MemberJust discovered this accidentally
with firefox
hold ctrl button while turning mouse wheel, zooms in and out
January 19, 2010 12:17 am at 12:17 am #673230d aMemberWhat Mod 80 mentioned works for all (I think) browsers and for many applications, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher etc.) Davka, Adobe Programs and more. Test it out!
January 19, 2010 2:13 am at 2:13 am #673231d aMemberI apologize, “Cntrl+Scroll” DOES NOT work on Davka (4.0, it may work on later editions)
I also just realized that on Windows 7, “Cntrl+Scroll” on the Desktop screen will make the icons get bigger and smaller. The same is true in folders with documents, pictures, icons ect.
January 19, 2010 2:46 pm at 2:46 pm #673233haifagirlParticipantNot exactly a tip (sorry 80):
I just got my computer back. It seems the problem was that Toshiba computers have a problem with Vista. Something to be aware of.
January 21, 2010 4:10 pm at 4:10 pm #673234yoshiMemberI’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but everyone should have a back up of their hard drive. If something should happen to your computer (virus, fire, stolen), it’s best to have a back up of anything you wouldn’t want gone forever. For instance, APPLE has this program called, “Time Machine,” which automatically backs up all your files. It might be a bit pricy to buy an external hard drive, but think of the cost of losing all your files, some of which you worked very hard on and depend on.
January 21, 2010 5:11 pm at 5:11 pm #673235potpieMemberDa’s tip regarding “I also just realized that on Windows 7, “Cntrl+Scroll” on the Desktop screen will make the icons get bigger and smaller. The same is true in folders with documents, pictures, icons ect.” also applies to Windows Vista.
January 21, 2010 10:12 pm at 10:12 pm #673236bombmaniacParticipantplease dont mention the V word around me…im still traumatized by the 2 days i had to use vista…it was awful!
January 22, 2010 5:35 am at 5:35 am #673237anuranParticipantBombmaniac, Microsoft seems to go in cycles of Eh, Yuck, Nice. Windows 98, WinME and Vista are definitely on the bottom of the cycle.
January 22, 2010 4:18 pm at 4:18 pm #673238bombmaniacParticipantlol as i hear it told…origionally micosoft was working on what we now know as windows 7 to be released after XP and vista as we know it would have been released a few years later with more advances. however, microsoft hit a snag with what we know as 7 and therefore reverted back to the vista “longhorn” project which they released before it was completely ready because they had to release something…
