I heard a while ago a beautiful moshol and decided to share it being that this CR is notorious for its bashing.
The US army is made up of many different parts. the navy, air force, marines, etc. they all work in their area and do the best job they can, but as good as they are, without the outher “departments” there wouldnt be a US army and they wont do too much good until they all get together, and do their different jobs, to create one whole. so too with Klal Yisroel we are made up of MO, yeshivish, chasidish, litvish, etc. we are all part of Hashems army. Seperately we accomplish nothing, only when we get together, different as we are, can we accomplish our tafkid.
Note: on a farfetchedly (new word!)similar topic for those who have access to youtube look for “every neshoma can soar”. a beautiful video sung by Shloime Dachs and his son Dovid for Ohel.
Very nice very nice! Hey can we use this as a mashal thread. I randomly come up with strange mashalim and why not share…
For example ever a passenger in a car where the driver is going mighty fast and swervy- and you automatically press down with your foot as if on the break but you are not in control so you cant really do a thing a bout it no matter how hard you press your foot…
Nimshol- Hashem is in the driver seat, try as we might to be the ones to run and plan our lives, try and try and do and do but no matter what Hakadosh Baruch Hu will be the one in control and will sweve the vehicle as fast or as slow as He does please regardless of if you press on the break. You can however talk to Him and if He decides it’s best to listen to your request so He will do! cool no?
i happen to have been at the ohel dinner and saw it there it was very nice.
Very nice. Even better, do away with all these pathetic “labeling” i.e. MO, Daati Leumi, Chareidi, etc. A Yid is a Yid.

There was once a man walking in the forest when he saw a big bear. Terrified, he took his umbrella and stuck the point out at the bear and the bear fell and died. The guy patted himself on his back saying, “wow look what i was able to do, i am so strong with an umbrella i killed a bear.” Then, behind him he heard a laugh, it was a hunter that said, “How do u think the bear fell, I shot the bear, do u think u can really kill a bear with an umbrella.”
Nimshol: We do things in this world and give ourselves so much credit, look how strong, smart, popular, influencial I am…with my strength, money I am able to ….If we would realize we are as powerless as the guy holding an umbrella and he thinks he killed a bear. There is a powerful force behind us making us seem successful, we just need to recognize that the strength is not ours.

There was once a young man walking through the forest. As he continued, he noticed that there was a target on a tree, that was hit perfectly on the bull’s eye with an arrow. He walked a little more and noticed the same thing on several more trees. He said to himself “this is remarkable, I must meet this skilled marksman who hits the bulls eye perfectly each time”. Suddenly, he heard the whoosh of an arrow fly by and landed on the tree right in front of him. But, there was no target on the tree. Moments later he saw the man who shot the arrow, come over to the tree and proceed to paint a red circle perfectly around the arrow. The man got to meet The Skilled Marksman.!
I have a nimshol which is commonly used in the kiruv world regarding doing what makes US feel good as opposed be being machniya ourselves to HKB”H’s will, but I’d love to hear other nimsholim.
Back in the summer of ’89 the camp I was in took us to a minor league base ball game that was stopped for 45 minutes due to rain. After the game continued the ushers let us all go down to (the now vacant) front row seats.
Later on in the game the catcher struck out and disputed the call with the umpire. The umpire kept quiet while the catcher was using vulgar language and making obscene gestures until he was ejected from the game. Unfortunately, to us young campers, the catcher was our hero.
One of the Rabeim knew he had to make a deep impression on us quick- I’ll never forget his Moshul the next day. “Do you know why the team picked him to be the catcher?, Because the catcher sits behind a cage (his mask) and that player is an animal who needs to be kept behind a cage at all times!”
It’s now almost 20 years later, and when I hear that players name mentioned I don’t think of his major league career or his minor league career, I think of him as animal who needs to be kept behind a cage.
kiruvwife- how bout: making the situation you find yourself in work to your benefit instead of krechtzing that this is not what you had in mind etc…

One of the best meshalim I’ve heard is from Rabbi Shafier. In India, strong elephants are tied with flimsy ropes to stakes in the ground. The elephant can easily pull it out and escape. Why doesn’t it? Because it’s been trained to think that it CAN’T. When it was a young baby elephant, the stake and rope were enough to imprison it. Now, it’s imprisoned by the memories of trying and failing so long ago. In fact, it’s imprisoned by NOTHING MORE than its own preconceived notions. If it would but try, it would be shocked at what it can accomplish.
