The coffee room is pretty quiet today. When people meet and they have nothing to say, the weather often becomes a conversation piece.
so here goes, its nice and warm today in the NY metro area. Do you like it this way (as I do) or do you prefer when its cold in December (maybe had ski plans?)
hmm, I wonder where this conversation will go, if anywhere. Global Warming? Will someone figure out a way to turn a conversation about the weather into a fight about tznius, feminism, TVs or cellphones? I wonder…..
December 15, 2008 7:39 pm at 7:39 pm #655409myshadowMemberI luuuuv when it’s like this! Feels like pesach already! Perfect weather for jogging/biking/bladin outside! Chap arein today!
December 15, 2008 7:46 pm at 7:46 pm #655410brooklyn19Participantyeah well if wanted to be REALLY frum i’d get into how cold winters are better cuz there’s less pritzus… or maybe not cuz then people tend to stay home and hang out in front of the TV or on the computer… see? not SOOO far fetched!
December 15, 2008 7:48 pm at 7:48 pm #655411NobodyMemberCharlie brown – now you’ve said the two words Global Warning, every nutter and his/her cousin will respond.
Obviously someone will say that we should all know that cell phones cause Global warming and watching programmes about it on TV is violating every halacha known to man and women shouldn’t be watching tv anyway cos they should be washing dishes and sewing slits in their skirts……
Shall I continue? nah! I’ll sit back and wait for the onslaught. I may come back after post number 100
December 15, 2008 11:18 pm at 11:18 pm #655412oomisParticipantI would love this weather all year round. The problem is that going back and forth cold to hot to cold to hot, as we have been doing, is making me physically ill.
December 16, 2008 1:29 am at 1:29 am #655413asdfghjklParticipantit’s freezing here in ireland today!!!!! i gatta turn up the heat!!!!
December 16, 2008 2:15 am at 2:15 am #655414yankdownunderMemberPeople want to blame the weather for physical health, this is not so. The mouth is really the medium. If I chose to eat nutritious foods that strengthen the quality of my immune system, then (with hashems blessing) I stay healthy. If I have a positive attitude and look for the good in everyone and what comes out my mouth is not negative or insulting then this helps elevate my spiritual immune system.
December 16, 2008 3:18 am at 3:18 am #655415xeroxMemberTO’s weather makes me so confused!!! First it snowed, then it was nice and sunny, then it snowed again, and now it’s rainy!!!!!
December 16, 2008 4:01 am at 4:01 am #655416mw13ParticipantIf anyone really wants to check the weather, I recommend weather.com (NOT accuwearher), especially their hour by hour report. They’re very almost never wrong.
December 16, 2008 2:29 pm at 2:29 pm #655417The Queen of PersiaMembera cute limerick:
Whether the weather is hot
Or whether the weather is cold
We’ll weather the weather
Whatever the weather
Whether we like it or not!
December 16, 2008 3:06 pm at 3:06 pm #655418SJSinNYCMemberI personally like when its cold! I like dry cold though because I have to walk to the bus stop and wait for it 🙂 I dont like wearing coats, and I love the cold feeling.
I also love the fresh smell right before it snows. I think Brooklynites have never properly experienced that smell, because its just not as fresh in Brooklyn as it is in Monsey or northern NJ!
December 16, 2008 3:08 pm at 3:08 pm #655419noitallmrParticipant“We’ll weather the weather”
Huh? Didn’t get that line?
December 16, 2008 4:21 pm at 4:21 pm #655420The Queen of PersiaMembernoitallmr: the first weather is a verb. To weather means to “bear up against” or “survive” (as per ms. Webster).
The second weather is a noun. (the state of the atmosphere).
We’ll weather the weather. We’ll survive and triumph against the atmospheric conditions, no matter what they be.!
December 16, 2008 4:43 pm at 4:43 pm #655421NobodyMembernoitallmr – to ‘weather the weather’ is a saying meaning ‘cope with the weather’
December 16, 2008 6:59 pm at 6:59 pm #655422brooklyn19ParticipantSJS – Brooklynites? or Brooklyners? or just plain “Brooklyn.” that works too!
December 16, 2008 7:08 pm at 7:08 pm #655423AnonymousInactivewheres the snow?
December 16, 2008 7:08 pm at 7:08 pm #655424notpashutMemberOf course it’s Brooklynites!!
Brooklyn, PLEASE don’t embarass us!!
December 16, 2008 7:14 pm at 7:14 pm #655425brooklyn19Participantlol i KNOW! but saying “brooklyn does this” makes more of a statement. and isn’t that half of what brooklyn’s about?
December 17, 2008 3:16 pm at 3:16 pm #655426myshadowMemberYea when it snows in brooklyn it’s worse than anywhere else! in 5 seconds it all turns gray and it’s impossible to drive! errrr! so annoying!
December 17, 2008 3:53 pm at 3:53 pm #655427noitallmrParticipantThanks The Queen of Persia. Seems I don’t “know it all”!!!
Howz the weather in Brooklyn at the present? Good old U.K’s freezing like usual…
December 17, 2008 4:09 pm at 4:09 pm #655428myshadowMemberBetter than yesterday BH! No snow!
December 17, 2008 4:22 pm at 4:22 pm #655429SJSinNYCMemberBrooklyn, what is the proper term for someone from Brooklyn?
Last night, I got off the bus around 8:30 and walked the 3 blocks home. It was snowing and everything was blanketed in a beautiful layer of snow.
I also liked that it melted by this morning so there was no shoveling needed. Getting up at 5 am is hard enough – no need to make it earlier!
December 17, 2008 6:01 pm at 6:01 pm #655430AnonymousInactivewho enjoyed the snow last night besides for me (dont all answer at once)

December 17, 2008 6:29 pm at 6:29 pm #655432brooklyn19Participanttechnically? Brooklynite. but look at my name – it’s “brooklyn19” not “brooklynite19.” just plain old brooklyn 😉

December 18, 2008 1:32 am at 1:32 am #655438noitallmrParticipantdont have internet- I also hate driving in the snow. My car tends to slip and slide on ice and you have to literally crawl along!
December 18, 2008 1:45 am at 1:45 am #655439xeroxMemberAnd i love driving in the snow!!!
**sometimes on side streets when nobody is around, i zoom up then break- so i skid a bit- it’s fun!!! (but only for a milli-half-a-sec: i’m still a VERY cautious driver!!)
-guess you can tell i’m sorta a new driver!!! 🙂
The only annoying thing is cleaning the snow off the car!!!
December 18, 2008 2:49 am at 2:49 am #655440xeroxMember-changed my mind – just went out to pik up s’t and swerved!!!! skidding is scary!!

December 18, 2008 3:27 am at 3:27 am #655442brooklyn19Participantxerox – yeah we can tell you’re a new driver. that was a quick transformation. it took you less than 25 minutes to change your mind.
December 18, 2008 6:04 am at 6:04 am #655443xeroxMemberwell when i went out to pick up something, i decided to try it again- and it wasn’t fun this time- i guess only the first time is fun!!!
December 18, 2008 6:09 pm at 6:09 pm #655444charlie brownMemberbrooklyn,
I hope you were being sarcastic about enjoying driving in the snow because its interesting. It’s dangerous and if you have to do it be extra cautious.
xerox,
glad you learned so quickly.
to all the young and new drivers out there,
if you start skidding, the impulsive thing to do is to slam on the brakes to try to stop but that only makes you skid more. The way to stop is to pump the brakes up and down as fast as you can. and steer in the direction you sre skidding in if possible. If you suddenly turn the wheel it will also make it worse.
/preaching
December 18, 2008 6:36 pm at 6:36 pm #655445AnonymousInactiveanybody try any donuts in the snow?
December 18, 2008 8:02 pm at 8:02 pm #655446myshadowMemberxerox gosh please be careful! I’m also a pretty new driver and I’m petrified!
Charlie, thanx for the tip I’ll have it in mind! I think they mentioned that in the 5 hr class possibly but would have totally blanked
December 18, 2008 8:52 pm at 8:52 pm #655447brooklyn19Participantcharlie i wasn’t kidding, but don’t worry i’m pretty careful. just mentioned that i enjoy a change in scenery 🙂 and i think i remember learning in driver’s ed that pumping the breaks does nothing. maybe she was wrong – i dunno.
and yeah you are preaching.
December 18, 2008 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm #655448noitallmrParticipantIt’s all very nice to preach and lecture about not pumping the breaks when skidding but Tachlis, when you’re skidding and headed for a vehicle or a wall- you wanna just floor the breaks and not think twice. Maskim?
December 18, 2008 9:14 pm at 9:14 pm #655449AnonymousInactiveCharlie most cars these days have abs
December 18, 2008 9:34 pm at 9:34 pm #655450myshadowMembernoitallmr, maskim.
Blabla, not my fakakt one!!!
Btw the weather is supposed to be horrible tomorrow!!! WE JUST CANCELLED WORK!!! YAY!
December 18, 2008 9:42 pm at 9:42 pm #655451squeakParticipantABS = anti-lock braking system
With this feature, the brakes will “pump” automatically. The pedal will pulsate against your foot. This causes some people to ease off the brake, but you should just hold tight. If you do, the car can stop up to 20% faster than without the feature.
Without ABS, the brakes can lock and the tires may stop spinning before the vehicle stops moving. This is dangerous (in an uncontrolled skid) because you have no control over the car from this point on.
You lose the ability to do some trick driving with ABS, but most people wouldn’t do those stunts anyway.
There are ways to learn how to react in a skid – many of them are counterintuitive. If possible, try to learn what to do and practice it (in an empty parking lot, please). I’m glad I did.
December 18, 2008 9:57 pm at 9:57 pm #655452charlie brownMembernoitall,
I’m maskim 🙂
blahblah,
with abs it doesn’t make a difference if you floor it or pump? Pardon my auto ignorance which causes me to ask that.
brooklyn,
glad you’re careful and sorry for preaching. If I BAKE you some donuts will I be forgiven? 🙂
December 18, 2008 11:24 pm at 11:24 pm #655453squeakParticipantOh it makes a big difference! If you have ABS and you pump the brakes, the ABS program does not kick in. Basically, you are shutting off the computer and saying that you can pump the brakes better yourself (but you can’t).
If you have ABS, press down hard and let the computer pump for you. But braking is not always the best way to regain control…..
