November 13, 2008 4:03 pm at 4:03 pm #1071750cantoresqMemberPerhaps you might want to consider some Jewish music and not the drivel that passes for Jewish music.
November 13, 2008 4:27 pm at 4:27 pm #1071751amusedreaderParticipantDovid Gabay’s latest cd
November 13, 2008 4:48 pm at 4:48 pm #1071752JosephParticipantcantoresq: What is your idea of “real” Jewish music?
November 13, 2008 5:47 pm at 5:47 pm #1071753cantoresqMemberJoseph: music based on authentic Jewish modes and scales. Although, that too is a slight misnoer since those modes and scales are based upon Greek tetrachords. But considering that those terachord and pentatonic scales were modified around 2000 years ago into Jewish modes and scales, I’m comfortble calling them “authentic Jewish.”
November 13, 2008 7:00 pm at 7:00 pm #1071754jewishfeminist02MemberI like the Chevra, Lev Tahor, and Shalsheles.
D’veykus is probably my favorite. They have 6 CDs out, all several years old, but excellent nonetheless.
I would also recommend Ruach and Ruach Revival. Those CDs are even older than D’veykus, but I’m partial to them because my uncle was in the band 🙂
November 13, 2008 7:47 pm at 7:47 pm #1071755cantoresqMemberI’m a big fan of Pinchas Segal a/k/a Pierre Pinchik, Moshe Ganchoff, Leib Glantz and Mordechai Hershamn etc.

note the “:)”
November 14, 2008 2:58 am at 2:58 am #1071757noitallmrParticipantjewishfeminist02- you couldv’e written that you simply like choirs! I personally don’t like the Chevra since they don’t use genuine music and their style is way too American, still they make a change!
Shalsheles- great stuff especially Shalsheles Junior!
cantoresq- are you really a cantor?
November 14, 2008 4:08 am at 4:08 am #1071758mazal77ParticipantI have 2 cd’s from Yitzchak Simcha, for some reason no one I know has heard of him, but I love those 2 CD’s(My kids are sick of them). And Dveykus, oh my goodness, that’s old, (probably a classic and should be a staple in your music collection) I know I bought one casette when I first got married 17 years ago, but they are very nice old melodies and relaxing, not rocky at all. Me ya’la behar Hashem, uhh Mi Yakom B’makom Kodesho, La La La,… I am thinking about that song write now, beautiful,(sigh) just beautiful. I think I may need to find some Dveykus CD’s.
November 14, 2008 3:55 pm at 3:55 pm #1071759smh1Memberthank you everyone for your suggestions.
I love D’veykus too! and Regesh.
(PLEASE don’t let this thread become rants pro/con Jewish music today. thank you.)

May 12, 2009 10:17 pm at 10:17 pm #1071769kapustaParticipantI think Ari Goldwag had an album a few years ago that was “bluefringish”. Called Flippin’ In Pure Soul. try it.
May 13, 2009 2:59 am at 2:59 am #1071770kapustaParticipantwhat about like Soulfarm? Noah Salomon? (I’m honestly not even sure of the name I doubt I ever even listened to it) btw, are you just basing that on the general Ari Goldwag albums because I remember hearing that one and thinking it was soooo different than the other ones.

May 14, 2009 2:59 pm at 2:59 pm #1071777aryeh3ParticipantAmes: “But I’m listening to his other stuff and it’s kinda getting on my nerves.”
Yes, I know, sometimes his stuff is too rough for me too. I guess I have 3 or 4 of his CDs and there’s one I like more than the others, but I can’t think which one it is.
Yosef Karduner, Aharon Razel, Gil Akibayov, Udi Davidi, Amir Benayoun, Shem Tov Levy, Yehuda Glantz are others from Israel who you might check out, if you haven’t already listened to them.
May 14, 2009 3:31 pm at 3:31 pm #1071778believerParticipantnoitallmr- how interesting because i like all different type of music- all the singers i posted are different. that is really funny.

Yeah I know that’s why I was so surprised to see your list because my taste is also all over the music scene- sefardi-litvish the works. But I suppose the common denominator of all the songs and singers are that they have good voices and musical songs!!!
May 14, 2009 7:34 pm at 7:34 pm #1071780believerParticipantdid anyone listen to the cd that the atime orginazation gave out by their chinese auction? its called sunshine in the rain- its aka pella. did anyone hear it?

May 18, 2009 6:26 pm at 6:26 pm #1071786areivimzehlazehParticipantames- I can’t really put my finger on what you’re looking for, but did you ever try Oif Simchas/Yishai Lapidot? Listen to a few CDs of theirs- you may like
May 18, 2009 6:43 pm at 6:43 pm #1071787aryeh3ParticipantJoseph – yes, it is called My Father’s Zemiros and is available on a chesed website he set up called Yad L’Shliach.
May 19, 2009 1:23 am at 1:23 am #1071788May 19, 2009 2:44 am at 2:44 am #1071789kapustaParticipantames, I’m not sure I’m understanding this (said in a questioning tone, not an accusatory tone) you want a CD that sounds goyish so it would affect you in which way?
May 19, 2009 3:02 am at 3:02 am #1071790kapustaParticipantI get you. If you allow little old me to express an opinion, I dont think someone who would write a song that would affect you in the same was as an authentic “goyish” song, is a song you would want to listen to and consider jewish.
My best advice would be to get hold of some “oldies” there are some excellent songs that are completely kosher.
May 19, 2009 3:13 am at 3:13 am #1071791kapustaParticipantames, there is one song (goyish) from maybe the 60’s (I’m not really sure, wasnt around to hear it come out for the first time) Its a beautiful song with very good music and the words are from koheles.
yes, IMO, there are worse things to do than listen to clean (I’m not saying so-so clean, I mean clean clean) goyish music.
May 19, 2009 3:24 am at 3:24 am #1071792kapustaParticipantlol, no. I’m just saying there are very good, quality songs that are goyish but are probably more “kosher” than some of the “jewish” songs out today. btw, do you know the song I’m talking about?
May 19, 2009 3:51 am at 3:51 am #1071793an open bookParticipantlol ames, imagine not having an ipod or mp3 player or even your own cd player. that’s me 😉 i’m not very attached to music.
May 19, 2009 4:45 am at 4:45 am #1071794JaxMemberan open book: when’s your birthday?! i know exactly what i’m getting you!
May 19, 2009 7:54 am at 7:54 am #1071795kapustaParticipantJax, I think you forgot about someone. (but you gotta think of something else)
May 19, 2009 7:44 pm at 7:44 pm #1071796areivimzehlazehParticipantames- I’m still racking my brain. I’m so into music it’s killing me that I can’t put my finger on what you like. Sounds like you side with Israeli music- did you try Gadi Elbaz, Itzik Orlev and Chaim Yisroel?
May 19, 2009 8:09 pm at 8:09 pm #1071797areivimzehlazehParticipantknow all about it ames- my music budget outdoes any of my other expenses. But I made myself a promise a few years back that I’d never scrimp on music, no matter what. I’ve been goin strong ever since 😉
