A father and son from Toms River drowned Monday while playing with a remote control boat on a popular fishing pond, Lakewood PD tell YWN.
The following statement was released by LPD Chief Rob Lawson:
At 6:12PM Monday evening, Lakewood Police Department responded to the area of 1750 Cedarbridge Avenue at the small retention pond to investigate a suspicious circumstance. A citizen reported that at 6:00PM he observed a Red Radio Controlled Boat bobbing up and down in the water with no one around. He further indicated that he went to the Post Office on Swathmore Ave and then came back to the scene and parked behind a Green pickup truck, got out and did not observe anyone around, and called the Lakewood Police Department.
Lakewood Police Department responded and canvassed the area, observed that the pickup truck had one door opened with expensive radio Controlled Boat apparatus unsecured, and near the south shore, a fishing pole was laying in the grass. About 10 feet away was a pair of boots, a set of keys, and a wallet also lying in the grass.
Deputy Chief Fred Capper and Captain Michael Mooney had responded and made the determination that a drowning may have occurred and requested a dive team response.
The Brick Dive Team, Pioneer Hose FD, Station 22 responded to the scene. Several of their personnel responded and a search of the pond commenced at 1905 hours. At 1908 hours, a middle aged male was found 40 feet from the shoreline in about 8 to 10 feet of water and removed from the water. The water search continued and it was necessary to call additional divers to relieve the first set. Point Pleasant Boro Fire Dept. #1 Dive Team out of Station 40 responded to assist in the water search. At 2011 hours a younger white male was found submerged 115 feet from the south shoreline in about 8 to 10 feet of water.
The Lakewood Emergency Medical Services responded and the Lakewood Emergency Management Services responded with light towers as daylight was fading away.
Both Mark Volz and Mark Volz Jr. were pronounced dead at the scene by Nancy Vaccaro, RN of the Ocean County Medical Examiners Office.

D/Sgt. William Rodriguez, Det. Steve Wexler, and Det. Oscar Valmon are assisting Ptl PJ Carney in the investigation.
Misaskim was not needed in this horrible tragedy.
