Mistaken ID Saved Livni from Arrest in London

The daily Yediot Achronot reports that police in December 2009 raided the northern London Hendon Hotel to arrest opposition leader MK (Kadima) Tzipi Livni for her alleged war crimes committed during Operation Cast Lead, when she served as foreign minister, supporting the counter-terrorism military offensive against Hamas terrorists in Gaza.

It appears anti-Israel activists in London thought that the Deputy Director of the Israel Water Authority, Tami Schor, who was visiting London, was Livni. They ran to court seeking an arrest order, which was granted, and police were dispatched to place the former foreign minister in custody. At the time of the raid Livni was back at home, averting a major diplomatic incident and possibly a complicated legal case.

While she was intending to participate in the water conference she canceled her reservations and since Schor has the same color hair and eyes as Livni, it appears the anti-Israeli activists simply mistook her for the former foreign minister. Yediot reports that Schor confirms the report.

  1. Why isn’t there an arrest warrent for Ahmadinijad who is in NY today. Why can’t we do the same thing to them?

  2. She had diplomatic immunity while in the U.K., so the police could never have legally arrested her or any Israeli official there on official business.

Any for what reason would they arrest Ahmandinijad. While he says some really stupid thinkgs and is no big friend of EY, he has never even been charged, much less convicted, of any war crimes so there would be no basis to arrest him. Also, as the host country to the U.N., we guarentee the safe passage of any member nation chief-of-state, so he would be insulated from arrest under that immunity.

  4. ah the British system of justice. It can be anti-Semitic and Israel hating and still consider itself moral!

  5. The major flaw with the Universal Sovereignty law is that it gives the Courts the rights to Foreign Affairs. I could only imagine one day a country going to war due to an arrest ordered by a single judge, and the foreign ministry being helpless.
Logic would dictate, that such arrests should only be possibly requested by the elected Goverment, who would take their country’s best interest in consideration.

  6. Fearless Lion’s comment above (#7) is the most erudite, logical and concise I have ever read on this site.

He (or she) has all the facts, simply expressed.

    Kol Hakavod!

  7. to Gadolhadorah:
For those who might remember, he was the leader of the Iranian militants that held the American embassy staff hostage in Tehran for over a year in 1979. That’s what he should he arrested for!
