Shabbos Connects Israeli Youths to Israel

According to a survey conducted by the ‘Masa Yisraeli’ project upon the prime minister’s request, 43% of teens in Israel state that Shabbat, the day of rest, and Jewish holidays are their deepest connection to the country. The educational program sponsors a trip intended to strengthen the identity of participants with Israel. The study involved 2000 teens between the ages of 16 to 18, asking them to explain how they view shabbat and yomim tovim. The respondents indicated that for some it is the family meal while others spoke of the unique atmosphere that prevails, an atmosphere embellished with customs and cultural activities, while other placed an emphasis on the visits to shul.

The survey reveals that 20% point to Hebrew as their connection to the land and 17% feel family and friends are their connection. 9% responded that it is the topography and 6% connect to Bible and Jewish history.

The results of the survey were presented to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Education Minister Gideon Saar and officials overseeing the Masa Yisraeli program.
