Israel: Yeshiva Bachur Admits to Driving with Friend’s License

A 22-year-old yeshiva bachur was stopped by traffic police at about 3:00am while traveling on the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv Highway about two weeks ago. He was caught on radar driving 159 KPH, 59 KPH over the speed limit.

He was sent a summons to appear before a traffic court hearing, prior to which he surprised police by coming to a police station and explaining to officials that the license he showed the traffic policemen that night was not his, but that of a friend. He explained that he does have a valid license, but since he is a new driver, he should have had a veteran driver accompanying him during the predawn hours, which he didn’t, so he decided to present his friends license.

Police added to the charges against him and a new summons to appear before the traffic court was issued in his real name.

  1. This would not be news if it inviolved a secular israeli college kid.

Do you think this is the first time such a thing happened in Israel? Also why is the fact that he was a yeshiva bachur relevant. Maybe we should know whether he was ashkenazi or sephardi as well. (lol)

  2. number 2-israeli licenses DO have pictures on them-obviously the cop didnt look to well or the guy on the license looked similiar to the driver……..

  3. yosse,

Not true. All drivers license has a picture ID. A new temporary license, like in NY does not have a picture on it. Israel is not old fashioned. Stop saying Loshon Horah! The police should have asked for his TZ, and compared the #s. The police let this one slip.

  4. Of course what he did was wrong and dangerous etc – maybe its just me but i think it took a lot of guts for him to admit this to the police when he knew he would get in even worse trouble.

  5. Let’s see now! 159kph, That’s only a mere 99Mph! He must have really wanted to get home fast. I can only imagine that the poor guy needed to go home and get some sleep to make it to shachrit in the morning. Why else would he be going at that speed?

  6. what an honest kid!
All parents of kids that request drivers licenses should learn from this. imagine if he didnt have a license all together where he would be going?!?
“if your kid asks for a license- allow them to get one asap- otherwise they will end up in hot water when they are caught without one!” (my rav)
