Peace Now Settlement Watch division leader Chagit Ofran released a statement to reporters that even though the courts have ruled to permit a right-wing Israeli flag march in the eastern capital, such a move is dangerous and it may be interpreted by local residents as a provocative act. She accuses event organizers, Chevron residents Baruch Marzel and Itamar Ben-Givir of trying to turn Jerusalem into Chevron “by imposing their will on others”.
Attorney Ziad Kawar, who represents the Arab residents of Silwan, warns the act is truly one of provocation which may lead to confrontations. He states that it is obvious to all the march is solely for the purpose of igniting the area.
Left-wing Israelis active in the Jewish growth in Shimon HaTzaddik area of the capital vow to be on hand on Sunday, alongside Arab residents, to hold a counter protest.
Police have complied with a High Court ruling permitting the march, but limited it to 70 participants, mapping out a 700 meter route, allocating a maximum of one hour for the event. Police add that participants may not be carrying weapons of any type.
