Toyota Motor Sales said late Friday it will recall about 600,000 Sienna minivans in the United States to correct a potential corrosion in the spare tire carrier cable.
The latest Toyota recall ads to the more than 6 million vehicles already under recall by the automaker this year.
Extended exposure to road salts can lead to a corrosion of the carrier cable in certain 1998-2010 model Siennas where the cable may fail. The spare tire could then separate from the vehicle and in turn lead to a crash, the automaker said.
Toyota is currently working to develop a fix for this problem.
The automaker said owners would be told to bring their vans to dealers for an inspection while it develops a fix. Once that fix is ready, Toyota will notify customers again.
