Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy who allegedly used the public-address system at a Washington Township Wal-Mart to impersonate an employee and order all black people to leave the store, authorities said Saturday.
The boy’s identity is being withheld because of his age, but police confirmed that the teen announced Sunday, “Attention, Wal-Mart customers: all black people, leave the store now.”
Police arrested the boy Friday and charged him with harassment and bias intimidation, before releasing him to the custody of his parents.
“This was an extremely disturbing even on many levels,” Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton said during a news conference, “Any statements like these that can cause harm or grave concern must be addressed as quickly as we possibly can.”
The boy was reportedly accompanied by a friend at the time, and police say they will investigate the friend as well.
In a statement from Wal Mart officials, the use of the public-address was called “unacceptable,” and a follow up release is expected this Saturday.
