Police are investigating the death of a baby boy who R”L suffered a cardiac arrest after he stopped breathing at a Shul in north-west London.
The eight-day-old baby, who had reportedly just underwent a Bris Milah, was taken to hospital after he suddenly developed breathing problems at the Shul in Golders Green.
A police spokesman said he was taken to the Royal Free Hospital by the Hatzolah Ambulance Service at about 8.25am on February 1.
He was later transferred to University College Hospital, where he R”L died on February 9.
A post-mortem examination found the baby suffered a cardiac arrest and oxygen starvation to the brain.
The cause of death has not been confirmed and police are treating the death as unexplained, the spokesman said.
He said: “Inquiries are being carried out by officers from the Specialist Crime Directorate to establish the circumstances that led to the child becoming ill.
A spokesman for the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the body that represents British Jews, named the boy as Amitai.
He told the Daily Telegraph: “We are deeply saddened by the event. There were absolutely no problems at the time of the Bris and it was about 15 minutes afterwards that it was noticed there were some breathing difficulties.
“No causal connection has been established between the circumcision and Amitai’s death. It was carried out by a mohel who is a registered member of the Initiation Society, which has been regulating and training them for over 200 years.”

Thank you YW for bringing us all the bad news across the yeshiva world. Does the post-mortem refer to an autoposy?
At least he was brought bebriso shel Avraham Avinu before he was niftar. A short life, surely for a purpose and/or a tikkun.
“Post mortem exam” doesn’t necessarily mean autopsy.
lets hope this doesn’t mean trouble for us in london the mohel, or the wider community.
Very strange..nebach
Does anyone have information on this & if this is really a true story? My cousin from Mancheser who told them about it never heard of it so they think it’s not true. They said it was never in the papers. So does anyone know anything & information about it? Thanks.
