The New York City Department of Health voted today to require all restaurants to post sanitation grades.
The letter grades will need to be posted by restaurant entrances by July 1st.
The board approved the new measure by a vote of 6-2, with 1 member abstaining.
The grades do not deal with the quality of the meal. Rather, they rate the restaurant’s cleanliness in the most recent Health Department inspections.
Health officials say most restaurants maintain satisfactory conditions, although roughly a quarter do have problems.
Restaurants that receive grades lower than an A will have a second chance to improve before they have to post their grades.
