Israel’s Myopic Police Chief

One must indeed question the judgment of Israel Police Chief Dudi Cohen, who on Tuesday afternoon, following days of heightened alert status in the capital and Islamic rioting stated he simply does not see “signs of a third intifada” as many are warning. One understands the senior position demands political savvy, but one also expects a modicum of reality in statements released from the nation’s number one cop.

The police chief is calling on Arab leaders to exercise restraint and act responsibly, to seek to reduce tensions and not the opposite.

The chief’s message follows a morning of Islamic riots in and around Jerusalem’s Old City, Yehuda and Shomron, not to mention widespread rock-throwing attacks against security forces and Israeli motorists, in addition to a number of firebomb attacks. At least 41 Arabs were arrested, a number of security troops were injured, at least 11 rioters injured, and rock-throwing attacks continue in the capital as well as throughout Yehuda and Shomron.

In a related matter, Cohen announced the current state of heightened alert status will continue at least until Friday.

  1. Perhaps the time has come NOT to give the arabs a PR victory? The arabs send a few score juveniles to a few cities to riot, to give the impression that the country is aflame. So the media (and we?) plays along and says that another intifade is on the way, encouraging the arabs to continue and broaden their protests. Maybe just maybe, if we call a spade a spade, we should tell ourselves and the world that the arabs do not have the widespread grassroots support for uprising that they once had. Let’s lessen, not highten, the arabs’ drive and enthusiasm for uprising. Let’s DIScourage them rather than ENcourage them.
