Foreign Minister Internal Report: White House Snuggling Up to PA

According to an internal Foreign Ministry report prepared by the ministry’s center for political research, despite the media hype over White House efforts to re-launch diplomatic talks between Israel and the PA (Palestinian Authority), the Obama administration is not genuinely interested in the diplomatic process, but the administration is focusing on Congressional elections in November. The report adds that the US administration is adopting a position more favorable to the position of the PA.

The ministry analysis states the US is stepping carefully, avoiding comment on “core issues”. In the meantime, special Mideast envoy George Mitchell has returned and tomorrow, Monday, Vice President Joe Biden will follow, at which time he is expected to announce the resumption of talks, indirect talks, which will last for four months.

Mitchell will engage in shuttle diplomacy between Jerusalem and Ramallah in the hope of advancing issues of conflict, with all sides realizing the chances of any real breakthrough are minuscule. Mitchell met on motzei shabbos with Defense Minister Ehud Barak in Tel Aviv and he is slated to meet with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) in Ramallah on Monday.

At present however, the PA has not officially accepted the Arab League’s suggestion to enter indirect talks to last up to four months. PA leaders are expected to formally accept the League’s recommendation some time on Sunday.
