IDF Chief Off to Washington for High-Level Meetings

IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-General Gabi Ashkenazi is preparing to leave for Washington for a round of high-level talks. He will be meeting with diplomatic and military officials on Capitol Hill, as well as making a stopover in NYC. A meeting is already set with National Security Advisor General James Jones and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen.

This visit is undoubtedly another step towards a military attack against Iran by America and/or Israel, as senior officials continue shuttle diplomacy from Washington to Jerusalem. Just last week Defense Minister Ehud Barak was in Washington again, and recent visitors to Jerusalem over recent months include numerous trips by the head of the CIA, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and Senator John Kerry, who heads the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee.

The United States may not carry out an aerial assault, but that does not preclude passive [behind the scenes passive] cooperation, which is critical, including assisting the IAF in clearing an aerial route over nations with whom Israel does not maintain diplomatic relations, jamming Iranian surveillance equipment, satellite intelligence photos and more. While the US may condemn an Israeli assault openly, in the media, it is clear to all such a move by Israel will not be made without advanced White House knowledge.

  1. Mr. Spira,

I genuinely hope that your assessment is correct. But I do not share your optimism that Ashkenazi’s trip is “undoubtedly another step towards a military attack against Iran by America and/or Israel”, not because I think you’re prone to err but because I believe you credit the current American administration with a much more practical sensibility than their track record warrants.

The best way to predict Obama/Mitchell/Clinton policy would seem to be to examine what they’ve said and done so far, which is to disbelieve the evidence that Iran is acquiring the means to exact its apocalyptic fantasies, and then to engage in futile negotiations instead of actually preempting an Iranian WMD first strike. If we ask ourselves “What Would Reverend Wright Do?”, we realize Ashkenazi is going to be told that the only thing his troops are authorized to do is arrest frum yidden and deliver arms to Dayton’s terror cells.

This is one occassion on which I hope to be proven wrong.

On a brighter note, this is a great Web site. Thank you for your pieces here from Israel.
