State officials say more than 800 fraudulent driver’s licenses have been seized this year across New York, a single-year record for the ongoing effort to crack down on fake identifications.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday that underage drinking sweeps conducted in 2016 by Department of Motor Vehicle investigators resulted in the seizure of 862 fake IDs. The DMV crackdown arrested 818 individuals for underage drinking, also a record.
New York’s year-round Operation Prevent program teams DMV investigators with state and local law enforcement agencies to conduct underage drinking and fake ID sweeps at bars, restaurants and concert venues.
Last year the effort resulted in 751 seized IDs and 758 arrests, both records at the time.
Earlier this year the Cuomo administration announced a crackdown on underage drinking at summer concerts and on college campuses.
